Suggest some improvements

Hello all,

I'm looking to improve the design on a site I've built. OCWars is a ps3 competition site for EU clans.

  • I want to move the login box to the header on the right side.
  • Get rid of the two logos on the right column.
  • Make it look a bit less boring.
  • Add a banner for each news piece, showing the category.

I think I should retain the 3 column setup as other like sites have that layout. For some inspiration see the following sites:


It seems that the three sites above put adverts in the right column but seen as I have no site visitors atm I'm not putting adverts on it yet.

Do you guys have any suggestions for how I can improve my site? It seems like I'm lacking content to put in the two side columns.
 
remember this is just opinion

  1. Change the font as im not too keen on it
  2. the side boxs would look better with a gap between each one, about the size of that blue bar in the sidebars, so it's easier to see where one begins and ends plus it would look nicer.
  3. having the web hosting and that stuff is ok but screams amature the way its been put as it doesn't fit the bar its in, it looks like one of the w3 html safe logos people put on there website.
  4. the navigation menu isn't centered
  5. there is no images, maybe one can be put in header
  6. header is extremely boring and needs something in it

Firstly I think your site is better than all 3 inspiration sites. It's probably personal but I hate those really busy sites!

Deffintely get rid of the two logos, moving the login box is fine aswell as top right is a common place for such things, however it could cause the sides of the page to become a bit bare.

A category banner is a good idea.

To make it less boring - I'm not sure, the footer could do with an uplift, maybe have it mimic the headers style. You could maybe add a mini forums feed to a sidebar. I would also change the rollover fo the main menu, make divs for each item and have the div subtely highlight maybe. Tbh I'm an advocate of the simple designs so I wouldn't change much.

quick at making those changes. Looks much better imo. honestly i think it looks boring at the moment as there isn't huge amount of content, but as the site grows im sure you will think of cool new ideas, like maybe you might get a forum, then as suggested above want a feed of latest threads, could also have emails sort of account etc.
