Suggestions for a bit of a change?

Thinking about changing from the GTI-6 (turning into a bit of a money pit and don't have the patience or time to fix the niggles) into something with a bit more shove and as well as leon Cupra R's I've always liked Accord Type R's, but last time I looked they were £7k+. Have prices really come down that much? A lot of them with 100k+ miles and I have vague recollections of certain ones having huge road tax and problems with gearboxes too?

Any other suggestions? £5k max, from a stealer, needs to have rear seats (although 3 doors are fine) and nothing too crippling on tax, fuel or Insurance. Having checked insurance, the Cupra R would only be about £12 per month than I pay on the '6 and is only £20 or so higher road tax, also manageable.

I don't fancy a Impreza or an Evo, really not my thing, but other suggestions welcome!

£7000 for an Accord Type R? Was the last time you looked 5 years ago? They can be had for the £3k for a shabby one to £5k for a very decent one.

Btw if you don't like little niggly problems that you don't have the time or patience to fix, I'd stay away from 10 year old cars!

I've got a 13 year old one now! That's the thing that bothers me about the ATR, even the last of them are '02 reg. £5k or thereabouts will get me an '04-'05 Leon Cupra R which seem to be generally reliable.

A 1.8T powered car reliable? Are you sure about that? :D

What I've heard about the VAG 1.8T is the coilpacks sometimes go, but they can be swapped easily enough although £30 a pop isn't cheap it's manageable as apparently it's easy enough to swap them out. Other than that, cambelt and service is the only things i've come across. Do you know anything different?

Under £150 for 6 months tax or around £250 for 12 months tax is my limit. I refuse to pay more £400 a year for road tax when the roads are in the state they are. my GTi-6 is currently £215 for 12 months.

I'd expect mid 30's MPG on a run which is what my GTI-6 gets and I'm happy to pay a bit more in my insurance. A leon Cupra R 225 is only £12-£15 more than I currently pay for my GTi-6 which is fine.

With your budget none of the cars with higher tax are really going to be on the radar so don't worry about it - tax is fixed at £143 6 months/£260 12 months for cars registered before 23rd March 2006.

They've all had a coil pack re-call now so this shouldnt be an issue. I had all of mine replaced for free recently. As far as engines go the 1.8T is pretty damn reliable but that goes for most if maintained properly.

Huge bump but does anyone have any history with astra coupe turbo's? There's one only a few miles away in blue for almost half the price of any Leon cupra r close to me.

I'd never consider an Astra Turbo over a Cupra R. Just spend the extra on a faster, better built, better looking car.
