Hi all,

17th birthday's coming up soon so It's time to start looking for my first car.

Budget is around £1500, Preferably lower. Obviously needs to be cheap to insure aswell. Suggestions?

Was thinking maybe a Saxo vtr/vts, or am I living in dreamland?

Many thanks :)

Dream on about a VTR, i got £2k on insurance when i quoted for one, and im only paying £1100 for a 306.

Pug 106/306, Fiesta, Corsa (though you would need to be mental to buy one), Punto. If your going for a saxo then it will be a smaller engined one for that insurance price.

Youll probably need more than £1k for insurance at that age unless you are in a very low risk area.

I could spend more on the insurance but the cost of the car would have to be less.

Could you guys perhaps point out some examples on ebay?

as a first car i would even spend £1500 i would get something proper cheap for about £500 and keep it for a year while you get some ncb gotta learn to walk before you can run.

I'd rather not be driving around an old rust bucket. But if I could get something fairly decent and cheap to ensure for around £500 then I'd be more willing.

I was thinking more along the lines of a hatchback. ;)

I wouldn't be seen dead in either of them cars. :D :p

Edit: Worded it abit wrong. What I meant was could you get me some examples of these cars: Pug 106'/306, Fiesta, Punto.

I dont paying around 1500 for a decent car. As long as its easy on the insurance.

:)

Rover 214 wedge, 1040 for me to insure at 17 :) its not slow either

Is that the same car as in your sig? If so, that looks horrendous! :p

Been looking at this car quite a bit. Is it a decent car? Only round the corner from me.

Quinn direct have quoted me the usual £1385, but I still think thats quite high.

What other good insurance companies are there for new drivers? Tried endsleigh and they're just a joke.

Cars considering atm: Saxo / Saxo VTR, 106 & 306. Not liking the look of the punto and I'm not going anywhere near a corsa. :D

:)

Got another question...

With the saxos, 106s and the 306's there are loads of different models. Is there any particular ones that I should stay clear of? Like ones that have been known to play up and are generally crap?

Normal Saxo's arent that bad. Unfortunetly they do suffer due the image problem but thats something you get with any Saxo now. The 1.4 Furio with the VTR/VTS body kit is probably the best bet for someone in your position.

Whats the image problem?

I've been watching this car since yesterday. What does 'cat c insurance loss' mean?

Sorry for my n00b questions.

Both of those cars are hatchbacks.
So they are. :o

Perhaps I should have said "Hot hatch".

That's a pretty damn good price, actually. If I was you, I'd pick up a copy of Parkers Car Price Guide from a local supermarket or newsagent. It's only £3.50 and it's very useful for knowing what you should be paying and for comparing different models and their kit.

Thanks. I'll pick a copy up.

What insurance companies should I be looking at?

I looked at and drove a few cars before I went for my VTR.

3 door 306 HDi ......Nice, handled well, seemed a bit flat, but at 70mph it was quite nippy.

3 door 306 1.9 D Turbo......Felt stupidly fast, I loved the torque but they are just too noisy for my liking.

3 door Punto Sporting......Flat as a pancake, hated it, dash is horrid, didn't handle at all.

3 door Fiesta Zetec 1.25......Nippy. Insurance is only £200 cheaper than my VTR.

3 door Saxo VTR......I don't care about the image, soon as I took it down the dual carriage way and just tapped the go faster pedal it sealed it for me. And then there is the handling, truly awesome grip, just don't lift off. No bodyroll at all.

Few questions:

Who does your insurance? And how much is it?

Ta :D

Quinn direct quote me £1600 for every VTR I put in. Goes down to £1450 if I do pass plus.

They also seem to quote me £1,385.03 for every other lesser car I put in. Wierd.

But thats still less than everyone else I've tried.

Tried Confused.com but they were just useless.

All of them?

Seriously one company will give one person a great quote and another a pants one; the only way to get a good price is to phone round.

Having said that, Quinn seem to be really good at the moment. They're also the first company to offer me a renewal quote I couldn't knock a hundred quid off by ringing round. Confused.com (despite annoying adverts) seem to be good for getting a good price for you.

I meant which companys are known for being cheaper than others for new drivers. It would be a real pain to check all companys out.

Confused.com come up with £2000+ all the time. They also say Quinn direct wont quote me! Useless.

Both my mum and her partner are both with direct line. Would they give me some sort of discount because of this?

Just tried the monysavingexpert one. Quinn direct yet again come out on top with the same old price of £1,385.03.

I'm going to try some of them direct now.

Ring around and ask, its all you can do.

All I've been doing is online quotes. Should I be ringing up instead?

Do Quinn Direct quote anything less than £1385.03? I just put in a 1991 Fiesta Bonus and it still comes up the same!

Also, just tried churchill a bell, both were £2000+.
