suggestions for an 8-port hardware raid array

lolz yes

Operations/Advances Operations/Reconstruction Wizard/Add Drive = voila

Takes quite awhile to add a drive to a big array, prepare for 24+hrs and a lot of nervous energy :p

Sounds like fun. I presume it'll do it in Windows, though, if I reboot after telling it to add drive? - just be a bit on the slow side for a while. When I repaired it, it appeared to be happy doing it while I used Windows - I just had to reboot to check it'd completed.

Yeh you can still use the VD/array while it is adding the drive, no need to reboot or anything.

You've been using MSM in windows right?

Just installed, and cool, could be useful. There's no way of actually monitoring physical disk status is there? Checking temperature would be handy, but I see no way of getting SMART data.

Trust me, it's not.
I've found myself looking up the weather forecast for the next 48 hours before starting, one power cut in a storm and you're screwed.
I spend 24 hours running the manufacturers deep diagnostic scans too on a new drive before attempting to add it to the array to try and weed out any weak drives.

Firstly, sarcasm for the win :p
Secondly, UPS for the win ;)
Thirdly, backup for the win in case of it all going norks up :D

If you haven't got the last two, though, and the first one aside, then yup not so much fun!

no SMART ....you'll know if the drive is probably no good once the array drops it ;):D

As long as you can keep your finger on the drive it's cool enough.

My finger test estimates 45ºC for the one drive of the array I can reach (the only one without a fan in front of it) so all's good.

Having just told it to popup if a drive fails, then closed the user interface (it screws up aero) - will it still popup? (If that feature actually works) - i.e. does the program still run in the background? I've a likely suspect on the process, "javaw", but no confirmation that it is indeed running in the background.

It works in the background, you can set it up to email you also in case you haven't tried that.

Yes leave that java app running ;)

MSM is pretty cool, for the money it's hard to beat these Perc cards ...yes there are others like Areca which provide more performance but for storage servers which don't place importance on flat out speed these are great.

I am still seeing 300mb/s writes and 500mb/s read so performance aint so shoddy either :)
