Suggestions for gaming headphones

I'm in the market for some headphones; their only use is going to be for gaming so a "gaming headset" is probably going to be my best bet. Although i'd like to get some HD595s, they lack 5.1 surround sound and a microphone. Plus, i'm not exactly an audiophile so chances are i'm not going to tell much of a difference in sound quality between your average gaming headphones and something from Sennheiser.

So, out of all the gaming headsets available, which would be the best?

Also, bear in mind i'm running 32-bit Vista using onboard sound; i'd also like to invest in a sound card pretty soon. Price isn't really a factor here, i just want something descent (since i'm likely to have it for a while) which will be compatible with Vista.

Thank you.

heh, vista... im pretty sure that it still supports nothing....

.... ;)

Only gaming headphones i've had were Speedlink medusas, now i know i have nothing to compare them with, but for the price, i thought they were awesome, made it so much easier determining which direction enemies were coming from, only gripe is, they aint very robust, one of the speakers has fallen out and is rattleing around inside the ear piece, and now, the left hand side doesnt work for the 'front' speakers, so i have had to switch to rear speakers only just so i can actually have left/right directional sound.. aah well (i guess im in the market for some new gaming headphones too then really :D)

Sound cards are having problems with vista atm as theyve taken something out, cant remember what though soz :(

Im going for the Creative Fatality with my new rig :D

Thank you for your replies. I know that there are a lot of issues with Creative sounds cards and Vista, but how is Razer's sound card with it? If that's the only sound card which will work properly, then i guess i'll have to get the, what i think are, overpriced Razer headphones. I don't really want to have to go down this route because other headphones won't be compatible with the sound card.

In terms of headphones, i think i'm going to pick out of the following:

£59.87 SpeedLink Medusa SL-8796 5.1 Home Edition + 5.1 Amplifier
£43.46 SpeedLink Medusa SL-8793 5.1 ProGamer Edition
£89.29 Razer Barracuda HP-1 Gaming Headset
£53.35 SteelSeries SteelSound 5H V2 USB Gaming Headset (comes with a sound card, apparantly)
£45.58 SteelSeries SteelSound 5H v2 Gaming / VOIP Headset
£35.19 Icemat Siberia

Is there any point getting the Medusas with the Amplifier over the normal version; would it be possible to connect some 5.1 speakers up to the amp, too?

I'm also considering a lot of the headphones Sennheiser headphones in their Pro-Gaming range, however these are very small and i imagine they wouldn't be as comfortable as some of the large ones mentioned above.

Any more suggestions?

Howdy :)

I have the SteelSeries SteelSound 5H v2, and am very happy with them. They are great for games, but be warned they aren't quite as good with music and movies!

Grr, just as i made my mind up on the Speedlink Medusas!

Hehe, thank you for your input. I think i'm going to choose between the Steelseries Steelsound 5H v2, Medusas and the Razer Barracudas. Am i right in thinking the Steelsound headphones are just stereo? If so, i think i'm going to have to rule it out since having 5.1 surround sound will probably be better for gaming.

I'm going to be ordering in a minute; i just can't really decide which of the 3 headphones above to get.

i'd bet my hd25sp's you would tell the difference between high quality and lesser models, get some sennheisers you know you wanna :D

dont get any of em, get some sennheisers and a stand alone microphone. surround sound means nothing in headphones, with eax on my sennheisers i hear the same as my mates medusas, but with the added bonus of them not falling apart every 2 minutes and they sound fantastic playing music!

I've gone with the Medusas, mainly because they come with an amp which will allow me to plug my speakers into it so i won't have to keep reaching down to the back of my computer everytime i want to use the headphones.

Since i'm only going to be gaming, i think the Medusas are probably the best solution for me (due to the mic and amp), plus they're pretty cheap. I'll probably get some descent stereo headphones sometime down the road but since i'm going to be using onboard sound for a few more months i don't see the point in getting them... yet.

Thank you for all of your help, guys. I'll report back with my opinions when they arrive. ;)

i have the SpeedLink Medusa SL-8796 5.1 Home Edition + 5.1 Amplifier they are awsome, only issue with them is interferance with my mobile phone, i have the older amp with mine, i purchased them about 16 months ago, sound and mic are very clear, came with all the wires id ever need too. They still going strong after all this time and been dropped several times too lol

Yay, thank you for your input. I was beginning to get second thoughts about getting them. They should arrive tomorrow; i'll tell you what i think of them if they do.

5h USB or Siberias. I think the Barracudas are overpriced but they are still a good headset, not good enough to warrant an extra £40 over 5h though.

I bought some Medusas with my new system in January. I haven't touched them since January. Waste of money. I wish I'd spent the money on a 7.1 speaker set instead.

I thought the sound quality was very poor, they don't fit my head properly (my head is not abnormally small) so weigh down on my ears and there is absolutely no sense of surround sound whatsoever. It just gets load when something is right in front of you and is quiet when it's behind you.

Just get some decent stereo headphones and a 7.1 speaker system instead.

like i always say, ignore gaming headsets, they are pants !!!!

Some senn 555's for ~£50 will be perfect.
