Suit for an interview?

Got an interview on tuesday and since putting on so much weight only got 2 suits that fit. Can't decide which to wear?

Suit 1: bought 3 years ago for 18th birthday, dark blue with pin stripes. Is my favourite but the trousers are looking slightly worn now (very small bits have gone bobly). Feels nice on as its italian wool.

Suit 2: bought it a few years ago and then lost 3 stone so i never wore it. Charcole in colour. Was resonably expensive when new (£200) but is an everyday suit and as such doesent feel as nice on.

I could buy a new suit but i plan on try to lose weight again :(

So basically do i put on the suit that looks better and might make a better impression or one that feels better on and makes me more comfortable?

Don't wear the jacket. Just wear the trousers of the first suit and shirt and tie if this is the case.

It's summer, so it wont look out of place.

I disagree. For many formal occasions people are expected to wear a suit all year and it certainly won't look "out of place". Depending on the place of work a suit might well be required for the job in which case it would be odd not to wear one. If a suit is what you feel comfortable in then you certainly should wear one.

That said, you shouldn't make yourself feel uncomfortable, and depending on the job it may be less expected to wear a suit for the interview during the summer.

I have to disagree i'm afraid, while an interview is formal the jacket is not expected or mandatory. All a shirt and tie is, is a suit without a jacket.

A shirt and tie is formal and given the time of year walking around places like Canary Wharf, it is perfectly acceptable.

Woah there.

There isn't a set rule for all companies. I've known some places to accept trousers, shirt and tie, and others to turn a guy away at the door for not having a jacket. Obviously depends on the job you're going for but in general making an effort in looking decent for an interview is vital.

While that is true I work for one of the most uptight IT companies and I work with some of the most prestigious and pretentious banks in the world and what we give here is only opinion....but no one cares about the jacket in summer time ,hardly anyone is wearing their jackets.

He'll get all hot and sweaty and greet his interviewers with sweat patches the likes of which will be noticed and it could even get to the stage where they think 'why did he wear his jacket?'.

Pinkpig is also right, rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

i wouldent go to an interview without a jacket, just doesent seem right. Maybe i would down south but local attitudes are quite old fashioned with this kind of thing.

Job is actually slightly less money than i am on now but with the way things are going at current company i don't know how much longer they will be there (losing 2m+ a year :( )

Don't actually know that much about it yet, just the salary and its "simliar to what i do now" acording to the lady i sent my CV to :(

Whether people wear a suit in the office is pretty irrelevant where interviews are concerned IMO. The last interview I went to, everyone was decked out in t-shirt and trainers and there's me rolling up in a suit and tie. At the end of the interview I asked about the dress code and joking said that I felt a bit overdressed - she said yeah but that's what's expected for interviews even if you never wear it again.

Regarding the sweat patches thing, I don't actually put my jacket on until I'm about to enter the premises. Then if it's really stifleing inside, I can always take it off.

That's when you take it off :p. Wear it so they know you have it and have made the effort. Then show you're a human being by removing it because its cooking! As you say, better to have it and not need it than not have it and sit in a room of suits.

Just don't do what some guy did the other week and turn up almost an hour late with no explanation, no jacket... and no tie.

Just take a jacket with you anyway. You don't want to be wearing a jacket outside when it's 50bajillion degrees and turn up at the interview looking and smelling like you've just run 2 London marathons back to back.

Put it on when you arrive and you'll be fine. They're not going to mark you down, so to speak, for looking too smart.

I went for my interview in Jeans and T-Shirt. I beat people wearing suits. I suppose thats because the type of job it is.

People will say that a suit is not required.

Take it from someone who Interviews - it matters.

By all means take the jacket off once you have introduced yourself, but for the love of god if you want to make an impression wear a suit.

You dont even need to wear a tie (makes you look fuddy duddy) just wear the jacket.
