Intrigued...Can I ask

Are all the bits I see that looks metal are actually metal?
How much does it weight when empty?
The grey handgrip on the telescopic handle is plastic, but the telescoping sections are all metal. The other two handles, silver coloured, I believe are plastic. However, they are made so well that I could only tell that by touch initially/by the temperature contrast between the handle and the two brackets either side that holds the handle. (They are definitely metal.) I normally worry about plastic instead of metal, but they all feel solid and long-lasting. The grey one will last forever unless it takes a serious knock, which is extremely unlikely if never checking it in. The silver handles, I can imagine might fail after a decade or two from fatigue, but a) that wouldn't stop the case being wheeled about, and b) in the event replacements can't be sourced (which is very likely I think, given this is not an established brand) I'm mentally prepared to craft my own replacements out of other materials. The handles have a fairly cool feature as well, similar to soft close on kitchen unit doors; when released, they slowly creep down until returning to their natural positions over about 3-4 seconds.

The grey bottom corner sections to which the wheels are connected, and the main body of the wheels themselves, are plastic. Looks sturdy though, although I do wonder about the long-term re: the wheels themselves. I doubt exact replacements would be available, but might still be possible to replace them with something of the same general design. I'd say the wheels are the possible weak link in terms of long-term reliability.

I just weight myself empty-handed, then with the case in hand, and the difference was 4.3kg to the nearest 100g.

Maxpedition and Hazard 4 both have numerous options you might like. I collect military style gear mostly packs/pouches/storage solutions, and these are my favourite two brands. I can recommend from personal use the following which might suit your needs:

  1. Hazard 4 Bandoleer - size and capacity probably perfect for your needs, but only issue is you'd need to mod it/add in patches, panels, other accessories etc. to provide a neat internal storage setup where things stay in place.
  2. Maxpedition Remora Gearslinger - probably just what you want, but even though smaller than my favoured Sitka, there's still a chance you might think it's too big for your requirements.
  3. Maxpedition Fatboy - not a conventional sling, but if you can adapt to the wearing method would serve you well.
I typically use either my Maxpedition Sitka Gearslinger (which fits a laptop) with a Janus chest pouch extension for passports/boarding passes, or if going to a particularly hot destination I use a combination of a Hazard 4 Tonto (mini-messenger) and Hazard 4 Airstrike Tech (rolling cabin case).

They look ideal however I’m not too keen on the military look. I’m thinking of getting the Patagonia Atom 8 it’s a bit more of a causal/outdoor look I go for.

Heres a question, possibly the wrong thread but has anyone ever used a sling for purely for traveling through the airport and keeping just the odds and ends in rather than a backpack?

I’d only be carrying in it ipad, sunglasses, airpods case, passport, cables, charger and battery pack. I’ve got a osprey backpack which is way over kill for what i need for breezing through the airport.

I just got one of these....it fits everything but the iPad, unless it's an iPad Mini?

It fits a Steam Deck though.

The Grey colour bag is a Peak Design 10L, which can fit up to 13" MBP....but I really don't rate it besides having the ability to carry a laptop/iPad

It’s the iPad 12.9 so no chance that’s going to fit in there or the Patagonia one I was looking at. Maybe just get it and not bother with the iPad. It’s only a 4 day trip. Phone should be fine.

Not that anyone will care. I nipped into a local outdoor gear retailer today and picked up this. It was only £20. I’ll test it on my next trip. Hopefully it’s a painless as I think it’s going to be. Can just stick the phone, watch and wallet in the bag while queuing up at security and keep everything else in it all the time.

Depending on how well it works, I maybe converted into carrying it around when traveling through cities give me a bit more room in the pockets and could start carrying a charger and cable when out and about in a unknown city/town.

I'm guessing its this one:

Hi all,

Have been looking for some new suit cases for the family, 3 cases for myself, wife and son he's 10.

Going away on our first family holiday soon, I've had a check on many different sites and not really sure what to look for.

Thanks all!

The main things:
* length of trip => size
* if hold / cabin => size
* hard or soft shelled => weight and if you don't mind them being squeezed
* two or four wheeled with handle

I tend to favour a case that has:
* soft shelled, but expandable
* has inbuilt clash/buckles that are part of a strap that goes around the case and across the zips - this acts to compress but also saves some stress on the zips.
* two wheels + handle

The wife prefers harder 'soft' cases whilst the mum in law loves hard cases, but I find I the soft shell works best for me.

I seem to come back to Samsonite designs and ended up with another samonsonite (cheap because it's discontinued but the one I wanted) when I bought for our recent Rhodes trip.

Personally, I wouldn’t spend a load of cash.

You can spend £30 or £300 but if the baggage handler is having a bad day, it doesn’t matter how much it cost, it’s getting scratched up at best, at worst you’ll be glad it came back to you with 2 of its 4 wheels.

I have had the same Eagle Creek wheeled case for since 2007 (so 17 years) and it is still going strong. It came with the "No Matter What" warranty meaning they will fix/replace it regardless of what happens to it. I did witness it fall off one of those carriage carts that cross the apron to the aircraft at full speed.... It fell off about 4 feet up, skidded along the tarmac and there wasn't a mark on it.

Easy to wheel as well as it has large rollerblade wheels on it rather than silly little castors or the like

I’m on the opposite end of the scale. I use duffle bags, have a few in different sizes and all different bright colours.

They’re super light and strong. So you can pack more into them if required. Easy to strap onto trucks, buses and unfortunately but necessary in some cases, animal.

They’re just easier if youre traveling around bus stations, tubes, trams etc as well I always find it funny when wheels are knackered or someone trying to lift their over packed suit case up a flight of stairs.

I appreciate wheeled cases are easier to move around the airport but that’s what trolleys are for and after check in I just use a backpack.
I can't see how you can easily carry around a duffle bag if we're talking checked luggage weights - carrying 20-25kg in a duffle bag is not much fun compared to wheeling a suitcase.

I've got a light Samsonite, it's hard shell enough to not collapse, and flexible enough not to crack.

Both halves are zippable which I really like.

Me and wife got Tripp hard cases 2 years ago, which have survived 3 trips now and seem fine. However having watched Newcastle baggage handlers slinging cases around, resulting in one bag bursting open as it appeared on the conveyer belt, I'm thinking I might upgrade before our next holiday...

No point, it doesn’t matter what you buy. The baggage handlers will destroy it if they are having a bad day.

The only thing you can do is don’t pack it to the point you have to get a 100kg fatty to sit on it to get the zip done up. If your concerned, put a strap round it and hope for the best.

Tripp suit cases are not poor quality, well certainly the ones we have are fine. We bought them from Debenhams a nigh on a decade ago at this point.

Once you’ve got past cardboard quality, spending any more is pointless. As I set out at the start, it will just get chucked about and bashed up anyway.

Jeez, i’ve done multi month long trips and not required 25kg, what are you taking with you? No wonder you need wheels. Sod carrying that weight up stairs or even trying to navigate that around.

If I did though require that amount for alpine style. It’d be done in my opsrey backpack which loads the weight ontop the hips so you can carry >20kg not comfortably but certainly easier than just using the duffle as a backpack which would indeed be awkward/heavy with that amount in it.

This. Funnily enough I just seen the women who was launching suitcases down stairs who worked for cathy pacific (i think). It’s no wonder wheels get bashed and broken. I’d put a strap around those cases if I was to use them as well, be nothing worse than all your stuff just spewed all over the place.
