I've glanced through the massive aion thread on occasion but still haven't made my mind up on it. I also keep seeing the special/collectors edition on steam and am thinking this is finally my chance to get in on an MMO at ground level, but what's it like?

Is it a similar play style to WOW...this would actually put me off tbh, wow is too dumbed down for my tastes. By the way, please don't turn this into a thread about how good WOW is/isn't, i've put 3 good years into it and my opinion stands. This is just a thread to ask about Aion.

Beta testers...how does it stand out from other MMO's so far?

Anything unique about it?

And the real question...do you guys think it will get a decent foothold and be a prominent MMO?

From what I gather (please shoot me down if I am wrong) is that is similar is set-up and the way it operates to WoW, in regards to interface etc. Which is nice in that being a WoW player this will make the game easily accesible.

But the play style is a lot more heavily PvP orientated that the WoW PvE rules and lets ignore every other aspect of the game approach.

Essentially I heard its likean earlier version of WoW in that it is an actual effort=reward system rather than a system that panders to the playerbase, make it simple and unintelligible to attract as many subs as possile.

Will it take off? Hard to say as WoW has such a stranglehold on the market and us so damn polished that any game with some (inevitable) faults on its new launch is pounded into the dirt by many players then they slink off back to WoW.

It is already massively well established over in Asia, from what I gather it has a bigger sub base in Asia than WoW, correct me if I am wrong, which is a promising start.

Personally I think it will take off well because of the fact that in terms of interface and many others aspects it is very similar similar to WoW, however because the game will require some effort to be put into it it will not pick up to the extent of being the fabled "WoW killer" that every one and their dog predicts come a new game. Hoping that it will skim a lot of the more PvP orientated and at the same time mature playerbase because you have to put effort into the game and then let WoW keep the children and whiners.

Well when the launch realeases we will be getting version 1.5 which has basically added another 20-30% of new content to the game along with much nmore depth in the higher levels.

I think the early stages are very similar to WoW but I think it can become much more technical in the higher levels (similar to Lineage II). I don't play WoW so I couldn't compare it properly.

I find Aion really refreshing but this is coming from a Lineage II fan so it's bound to be miles better than that etc. The art style is great and the game feels really polished and balanced compared to other MMO betas I have played. With all this being from version 1.0 of Aion to is very impressive, I've read the patch notes for the other updates and it looks like there has been plenty of tweaks and balancing done already.

I believe it will take off but not in comparison to WoW. It should have a much larger following compared to WAR, Age of Conan etc just due to how well the game has been made thus-far.

Man that guy always reminds me of someone I know...

Aion is a great little game, I played the Chinese game but decided to stop playing and wait for the game to come out over here. It's a great little game, it's a lot like WoW but the graphics are much better and you will find character customization blows WoW out of the water, both in terms of character faces/build but with equipment too, there's a lot of variety and generally speaking a lot of level 20 gear looks better than lvl 80 WoW gear...

I really miss it tbh, but the only problem I have is that the PVE content fizzles out quite abruptly and quests basically disappear in favour of going into the abyss and going through rifts to the other side. With me playing the Chinese version PVP was pretty hard because of the lag but IT WAS FUN.

There is just something about Aion that makes it seem a lot cooler than WoW, the combo system, the skill dynamic and for one... how good healers are, you won't find the cleric (aion's equivalent of priest) whining about being underpowered, clerics are fun to play and powerful. And the best part about healers in Aion is that it is very easy to heal and your "mana" lasts for ages... Might sound like it's making the game dumber and easier but trust me it just makes things better. Either way being a healing class in Aion was a lot better than healing in WoW.

The only worry I have with Aion is the endgame content, but when you look at WoW it has built up it's endgame content over years and years, there wasn't that much when it first came out. It is a fun and very well put together game, even if endgame sucks I'll still play it just to get to that level.

CHeck out my combo video for a little explanation of combos: http://chaoticsignal.com/2009/05/07/aion-combo-video and if you look around my site there's lots of other aion videos too :)

Thanks for all the replies. From what everyone is saying seems as though it's taking the best of WOW...actually, probably the best parts of MMO's prior to WOW which WOW simply adopted...anyway, back on point. Seems as though it's taken the best parts of other MMO games and expanded on them, the emphasis on PvP greatly interests me, especially if it's more skill based.

Didn't know that :D

OOOOH early access with my pre-order!!! :D

Btw does anyone know roughly when the collectors editions will be made available for pre-order?

Most places they have been up for pre order and sold out already. Not sure if the official NCSoft offer the Digital Download of the CE still.

They are available now on digital download

*beat me too it!*

This thread has tipped me over the fence to pre-ordering :)

Also if you pre order you can get access to the beta weekends. If you dont like it you could then cancel your pre-order (BUT check the terms and conditions of your order if you do this)

How about the crafting system?
I have to admit being a bit of a crafting nerd and loved UO's and SWG's systems - is Aion's anything like that?

Aion is very stable and from what I've seen so far bug free. This is from a perspective of a lvl 25 char.

It still needs polish of course, but patch 1.5 will address this before release.

Anything unique about it?

Other than flying combat, I can't say I've seen anything new in Aion. But what I have seen has been done to a high standard so far.

I haven't done much crafting myself, but it does look deep and rewarding from what I seen of it.
