A month earlier than Tummy's thread last season but given there's some pretty big rumours already I think it's time to close the January one and look to the summer.

I'll be honest though I'm really starting this thread to talk about Gaitan, a lot of noise that he's pretty much signed. Unfortunately my first real look at him was tonight and he wasn't very good :/

Why do you say that? Is it a rumour that going round the Spurs boards or you just winding us up?

Like I said big rumours are that we're going to sign Gaitan and we're also interested in his Benfica team mate Garcia. Another name being strongly linked is Martinez of Athletic Bilbao. Haven't read anything other than those 3.

bit of a wind up but no doubt the rumour will come around soon enough though february is a little early, hence the wind up ;)

i would be very very surprised if united or chelsea don't make a serious bid for him though and with his stance over his contract (he's thinking his future over, this is common knowledge as he refused to sign a more attractive contract i believe with the intetion of re-assessing in the summer)

it's a nice position to be in, he's at a very exciting and progressing team playing some great stuff but know's he is wanted by chelsea and (although no formal bid was ever made) united too and could atleast double his wages at both clubs and be a constant challenge on the pl with united. be a shame if he went but if we got offered £50m, we should let him go (unfortuanetly) he has been a great player for us and bucked his ideas up after the first 2 games for us. it would be a little unfair to deny a player of his attitude and ability the opportunity of playing at a club like united but he has to realise (unlike berbatov did) he would no longer be one of the biggest fishes in the pond and it may not always be happy times as he certainly wont want to be on the bench.
 
I cant see us going in for him tbh, too expensive and will be pretty much 27 by the time next season starts as well meaning little sell on value.

I think I'd prefer to have a better defensive option than creative option. We already have creative players who alongside a good DM might be able to grow their game more if given more license to go forwards.
 
Gentleman's agreement between utd and benfica to sign gaitan ? I hope this guy is as good as his 30 million fee might suggest. From what I have seen so far (very little I might add) I think this has disaster written all over it.

Out of the two an Alonso without a doubt. As I've said before under Fergie we will never sign a player that's basically a one trick pony like Lucas. Given the 'interest' in Nasri and Sneijder in the summer I think it's fair to say we're after someone comfortable on the ball with the ability to unlock defences. I've never seen Martinez play so I've got no idea if he's that type of player but from what I gather he's more akin to someone like Busquets (but I might be well off there).

Of course with Cleverley's emergence it could be argued that that creative player is no longer needed. Providing he signs his new contract it seems the management has great faith in the long term with Pogba as well (but he's only 18 so still one for the future rather than now/next season)

30m does sound like it would be about twice what you'd expect.

I'd be surprised if Fergie was willing to spend that much on someone who isn't really a big name.
