Sunbeds, discuss!

No point in subjecting your skin to so much radiation. If you want vitamin D sort out your diet/spend time outside or if you must take supplements (I do over the winter months). Fortunately, I tan very easily, but I still wouldn't spend hours in a sunbed.

an example, I am off to Antigua on Thursday

I am complete PALE Snail at the moment, more whiter and white. First off I will look ridiculous with my top off surrounded by tanned people. Secondly I don't want to burn and have my whole holiday ruined. So I have been tanning for the last 2 weeks which has helped loads.

In some cases its acceptable other than that its not.

No it's not.

Just wear suncream and slowly expose yourself more and more. You're not doing yourself any favours even if you're just after "taking the edge" off.

You are pale because you're from the UK and its winter; this is normal. There are magic creams available to stop you from burning in the sun, have you heard of them?

People's vanity really does astonish me some times.

My so my mother/girlfriend/friend-of-a-friend/hairdresser/ahem uses those moisturisers with a hint of tan, like Dove. They seem to give a natural subtle tan and none of the awful orange or build up (because it is so gradual). With safe creams like this I have no idea why people regularly burn themselves and substantially risk cancer.

We are looking at this the wrong way..

Its like Darwinsim. All the stupid people who over use sunbeds will go onto develop serious cancers.

Thats either a positive thing as you are removing utter stupidity from the general populous, or a bad thing as the taxpayer would ultimately end up footing the bill for these people.

Supplements??

Whats wrong with actually eating food as a way to get more vitamins. We must have gone so wrong as a society that we are ready to pop pills and take powders than actually eat natural ingredients.

This makes me sad.

That's why I said "if you must" - and emphasised, diet and spending time outside.

Even food isn't quite enough - getting direct sunlight is the best way of boosting vitamin D.

You don't have to be sad, I may have a *little* clue ;)

I don't use sunbeds and I can't foresee a situation where I would but if someone wants to and are aware of the risks then I'd see no reason to try and stop them.

If it's the appearance of having a tan that appeals then the spray on tans might be a reasonable alternative without increasing the risk of skin cancer in quite the same way - albeit the effects longer term of the spraying will be almost certainly less well known than the effects of exposure to UV radiation.

I shamefully used them during my twenties. I used to think the laying down ones were quite relaxing. In hindsight, not a great idea really are they and i have back damage cased by over exposure.

It's weird how we seek to be a different self and don't except who we really are.

So long as they're used safely, regulated and supervised then i see no problem. However, it's far too easy for the average moron to slap themselves in them for far too long on whatever settings they like.
It should (IMO) only be allowed in a restricted and controlled environment.

Cost money
Cost time
Give cancer (gay cancer)
Make you look a bit of a ******* in mid winter

..What are the pro's again? :p

Edit - If you suffer from bouts of SAD and find sunbeds help I would accept the drawbacks and use them, becuase that sucks.
