Sunday Times to investigate OLED Screen Burn Issues

Hi all,

Stumbled across this thread whilst looking for recommendations for a new 65"" TV in this section of the forums. I've been looking at various makes/models including LG and Samsung as there seem to be some decent deals around right now. But I had no idea at all that screen burn was an issue with OLED. I'm not very 'in the loop' with the latest TV tech so I'm not really sure what things to look for - does screen burn affect QLED also?

No does not affect QLED which is at its core, LED with quantum dots. LED TV's do not have the burn in you can get with OLED.

In regards to OLED in general it has "apparently" got more resistant with newer gens and they come with some mitigations built in. I have a 2019 model and few more since, no burn in and with mixed usage + gaming am pretty content with them. Of course need few more years on them I suppose but hopefully the additional mitigations are there helping.

Well looks like I have fallen to burn in on my 65inc C8.
Normal veiwing I would have had the TV on a dimmed setting for the wife and kids etc.

Game on quite a lot but hardly ever in HDR modes and I can see very faint lines were bars would be.

Blue, yellow, green screens all seem fine but red is the problem.

Biggest problem seems to be the red youtube logo. also the centre of the screen is very worn. Not noticeable in normal content but certainly has me irked and browsing NEO LEDs lol

£2700 paid at the time.

I'm pretty sure Samsung provides 10 year burn in warranty on its QLED TVs so yeah they are very confident it's never burning in. I wouldn't trust IPS though, I have a LG IPS TV with burn in.

QLED isn't perfect though, I also have a Samsung qled which while it doesn't have burn in, one of the LED lights powering a dimming zone is significantly more worn than others and it causes the entire centre of the screen to look dimmer than the others

I've created this thread for anyone who has experienced OLED screen burn and has not reached a satisfactory resolution with the retailer they purchased the product from.

I am currently in dispute with John Lewis over a screen burn issue on my 55" LG B6 OLED TV. I've been given the run around like many others and they are refusing to cover the screen burn under warranty as they say it's explicitly excluded and they also don't consider this is covered under the Consumer Rights Act, 2015 as they classify that it can only be caused by misuse. As I'm sure was the case for many of you, this really got me annoyed as a TV should be fit for purpose and be expected to last at least the 6 years required under our consumer rights.

After contacting the Question of Money, of the Sunday Times, I got a positive response from Jill Insley who writes the column. Jill has agreed to investigate my case and I highlighted how I believe the problem is widespread. So she has kindly agreed to take complaints from anyone else affected, regardless of which retailer you purchased the TV from.

I'd appreciate it if you could reply to this thread if you do send in your details, just so we're all aware of the numbers of people involved, but clearly that's up to you.

So Jill asked for the following:

"No complaints going back further than six years. If the complainants could email me at this address, and put OLED and the name of the company they bought the TV from in the email title, then give fuller details about when they bought the TV, when the problem developed and a description of the problem, and what response they have had from the retailer, plus an emailed copy of the receipt for the TV "

The email address is [email protected]

I hope Jill can shame the retailers and LG into some reasonable course of action.

Please feel free to spread the word elsewhere as I'm not really an active contributor on forums (just created this account today after seeing how many people were affected). I will also look for other forums that have posts of OLED screen burn.

Good Luck to everyone

Edited: My dispute with John Lewis has now been resolved - see a later post on this forum. The Sunday Times had not yet followed up with John Lewis and as this is now resolved, they will no longer investigate and report on my case. However Jill has said she will look at any other cases she has received and see if these provide the information she needs to investigate this.
I have had a similar experience with a major retailer. My OLED TV was purchased in May 2018 with a 6 year guarantee, now they are claiming that Screen burn is not covered. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you José

When i bought my GX OLED from John Lewis, i made sure i got the additional Protect+ package. It was a few hundred extra i think, but in my opinion, well worth the peace of mind.

4 years later, the TV is still going great, no burn in signs and no dead pixels that i can see. Its had several thousand hours of use too.

I have just sent an email to Jane Isley. I appreciate all the help I can get.
Thank you José
