Please can someone advise whether it is possible to opt out of working on a Sunday if you don't work in a shop?

My employer is introducing a new contract requiring me to start working Sundays, there's been a fair bit of backlash and one of the rumours going around is that one can simply refuse to agree to the introduction of coming in on Sundays.

Now all the stuff on the gov and citezens advice website relates specifically to shop workers working on a Sunday and we're not in a shop, we're in a call centre.

Does the Sunday opt out ONLY apply if you work in a shop?

A quick google shows you can opt out only if you work in betting or in a shop and are not contracted to work only on Sundays. Outside of that legislation it is dependant on what is in your contract.

...which they are unfortunately changing. An employer can mandate a new contract on you if they can show there is sufficient need for the business to do so.

So you're probably stuffed unless enough indispensable staff refuse (and that's only because they can't afford to sack you all).

What is so special about Sundays?

It used to be a special day many years ago, but you could also not buy a loaf of bread either. Swings and roundabouts mate. ;)

Do you have a source for enforced/mandated contractual changes?

I'm interested rather than challenging this.

No. I'm not an employment solicitor but feel free to Google.

I'm confused. You don't have a source for your assertion, making it unfounded opinion?

I'm really not interested. If you feel strongly then do some searching and either post something to support it or post a conflicting view. The internet is a free place so you are welcome to do your own work.

So the bolded part - for the OP's reference and absolutely central to his question - is garbage you made up?

I've told you my position on it. I'm not interested in whatever problem you have and will take no further part in this discussion as you are deliberately being confrontational.

Why do people feel the need to reply to threads with answers when they don't have a clue? Very strange.

Cheers, I thought that was the case. So those who go into their consultation banging on about the law haven't got a leg to stand on.
