Sunseeker Rallye

Yeah, had a great day. My first ever time photographing cars, rallying or even fast moving objects!!!!

Any advice on how to get them sharper then Joe as you are more experienced in this field? I was using AF-C with an AF-S lens so it should have tracked it fairly well but they dont half come round fast!

It was really only a couple that werent so sharp. You did a very good job with them tbh.

What shutter speeds were you using? If the cars are moving pretty quick you can get away with quite fast shutter speeds, e.g. 1/400 or even 1/500 and still get a panning effect.

Also, what lens were you using? I guess it was quite short, as you could fairly close to the action?

I have never shot rally cars, so I dont really know much about them. dod would be better (I think) in this field.

Good work. :)

Shutter speeds of 1/125th or 1/160th trying to keep a sense of action, and also a wide aperature without upping the ISO (so working @ ISO100 mostly).

Lens was a 24-85 i got for my GF @ christmas, seems excellent for the money too, obviously coupled to my D200 using Sandisk Ultra II CF card.

I should have tried faster shutter speeds, but i was fearing losing the "action" - guess a bit more experimentation might have paid off :)

SDK's your man for panning shots.
A lot of it depends on the speed of the subject. If they're not that fast you can get the shutter speed down. If they're too quick your panning technique really gets tested. Like everything else it's practice and experience.

I was at the track practicing technique and experimenting with shutter speeds today. This isn't really panning but it shows you you can still show motion at 1/400. These guys are shifting though
