Hello All,

Got a strange issue with my SH5, the SH5 is nearly a year old.

The issue is with the 2.4ghz channel, The 5ghz channel is fine and has no issues even when this problem is happening.

The issue:

The 2.4ghz channel will just suddenly stop broadcasting.

After trying to resolve the issue it will randomly start working again and be fine for while without any issues then it will drop out again.

This effects 3 x phones and 1 x tablet as these are not wifi 6 devices they can only connect to the 2.4ghz channel, when this happens the 5ghz channel is fine (TVs\laptops connect to this and have internet).

I have these channels separated and connect devices to the supported channel.

I have tried the following

- Changing wifi name
- Disabling and re enabling the wifi channel
- Factory reset the SH5
- Turned the SH5 off for 5 mins

Is there anything else worth trying?

I do not have a wifi router to put the SH5 in to modem mode but I have been considering this route, Can anyone suggest a wifi 6 router that I can separate the channels on?

You could contact Virgin and see if they can send you a replacement.

What phones/tablet are they? They should at least support WiFi 5/ac or WiFi 4/n which both works on the 5GHz channel, even budget phones can work on 5Ghz unless the phone/tablet is really old. And 6 is backwards compatible so 4/5 devices can connect to it usually with no issues.

I could but I hate contacting them as the support is terrible so kinda doing this as a last resort.

The phones are Samsung A12s (all 3 of them) and the tablet is a Samsung Galaxy Tab A. These devices do not see the other network

Normally I can get it working but this evening it does not seem like its coming back so a call to Virgin maybe needed.

All wifi 6 devices and wired directly to the SH5 all work fine.

Ah the A12 does indeed only support 2.4GHz. Tab A depends on the model, most does support 5GHz but sounds like the one you have doesn't.

Managed to get it working Sunday but then happened again last night.

Getting annoying now so will give VM a call after I finish work, I bet they will say its not an issue with the SH5 or claim that they do not support the wifi on the SH.

no matter what you do it just refuses to work again until it feels like it.

any particular reason why you messing with separating the channels?

Do you have a particular reason for doing so?
my son's tablet does not play nice with them being managed by the SH5 (As 1 SSID) and this was the only thing that resolved the issue.

I called VM, got a new SH5 coming tomorrow (so they say) and go from there

Quality, hopefully it is the hub and it will work. It seems to be that they just sending new hubs out left right and centre atm.
I cannot see it being anything else as everything using the 2.4ghz SSID looses connection due to it no longer being available\broadcasted

we will see lol

Only time I've seen 2.4GHz being knocked out was at a family member's, couldn't find anything until it was near dinner time, only to realise they had a very leaky microwave...

Seeing yours is down for much longer I doubt it's something like that, but maybe there's a new device introduced recently to the home that could also be leaking on the 2.4GHz?

Sounds like a faulty router, I'd either replace it or stick it in modem mode and add a decent WiFi AP or mesh unit.

Is the Super Hub 5 a Virgin unit?

I have had no new electrical equipment for quite some time and I do not own a microwave. The PC right next to it has not had any hardware change since 2019 (I7 9700K\Z390 mobo\32GB of ram)
Missed that, sorry.
Its a SH5 which I have had for just over a year now, got the free upgrade back in Jan 2022.

That was going to be my next option, get a router and stick it in modem mode but looking at the prices its about £100++ for a decent 1 so thought I would try VM and see if they will send out a replacement.
