Just got this drive to replace three others, 2 of which were also WD Black drives, a 1TB and a 2TB which were quiet. In use this new drive is quiet enough, even when moving 3TB’s of data across to it, but when I’m not doing anything it starts making a racket every now and then and task manager shows it’s in 100% use, if I move the cursor it stops every time, I’ve timed it and it appears to happen after about 4 minutes 30 seconds, loudest I’ve ever heard a drive, in fact it’s loud when in the room below the one it’s in.

Anyone know what it’s doing? Is it Windows occasionally indexing the drive? Will it stop eventually or do it less? Is there anything that can be done to stop that?

Thanks.

Is it indexing or on auto defrag? Got chrome installed which is doing some software reporting thing that keeps reading drive for no reason?
