Hi guys,

Might be one for Fuzz on the remap front, however....

As some of you may know - I moved to Ireland (Republic) a few years ago, but didn't take/keep my Evo with me at the time for a few reasons.

Ireland has never really done Super Unleaded since Shell left the country as far as i'm aware, but they used to do E85 up until a few years back and more recently Maxol E5 (similar to Tesco 99) up until a year or so ago when it was withdrawn due to the government taxing the **** out of it

In essence, you can't get anything upwards of 95RON here.

I've just bought a house in Ireland which includes an accommodating garage and so I'm thinking of bringing the Evo over on a more permanent basis. However, the Evo is mapped for V-Power (99RON) and so you can probably see where i'm going with this.

Should I:

  1. Remap the car for 95RON and die a little inside from the negatives of doing so (Advice on the downsides of doing so are appreciated - aside from power loss that is)
  2. Use octane booster (although I've heard that it is difficult to get decent multiple point boosts and the returns are diminishing)
  3. Find a race fuel supplier who supplies some of the less barmy derivatives and take the cost on the chin (concerns on fuel stability/going off and price)
  4. Sell the car and get something less fussy (slightly tongue in cheek, but if i'm to sell the car - now is the time before I go through the registration process)
  5. Any other suggestions?

N.B. I have another car as a daily and the Evo will most likely be used for only fun, so a tank will most likely go further than normal.

Do you know what the BHP penalty for remapping the car for 95RON would be? I can't see it being more than 10-20bhp? This would be my choice.

The question is will the evo engine happily accept 95RON even with a map?

The K20A in my DC5 is designed for 100RON, and the closest we get is 99. If I started using 95RON at every fill up then over time it has a much higher likelihood of knocking, misfiring, and eventually dying. It's not guaranteed, but it is a possibility. Just something to bear in mind.

Were it me, I'd look at the costs of fuel or additive supply if you really love the car, otherwise move it on and look at something else... :(

Hopefully not - i'll get in touch with one of the tuners and find out. Problem is, it's all too easy to start looking at "options" whilst it's in :D

Map for 95 imho

However how much is the map gonna cost?
If its hundreds then I'd look at getting fuel supplies elsewhere.

Hopefully not - although to be honest the increased fuel price will eventually offset the cost.

I don't see why not. From my limited understanding it should be mostly a matter of pulling the timing a bit although there might be more to it.

I suppose that's why i'd like to get Fuzz's opinion on it on the remap front - hopefully he'll show up otherwise i'll trust him an email.

I saw that he advised against a 95RON remap on a Scooby on another thread, but I may have been viewing it out of context and it may have been for a specific reason.

I'd probably just get a map got 95, like you say it's all about pulling timing out of the map really.

Another option is find a supplier of meth and do a meth map and just mix it yourself with 95 as you should get a decent power hike that way and still use the regular petrol over there.

Was just about to suggest the same as sovietspybob.

Premix 20% meth with 95RON and have it mapped to suit that.

No loss of power, no risk of detontation.
