Super Unleaded - i cant see the point - who runs it?

When i first got the SX i stuck in bog standard 95 ron as it was stock no modifications when i started increasing boost i changed to SUL i did occasionally put 95 back in if i couldnt find any SUL. But since getting remap it was advised to use 97 or above as it was mapped for this fuel.

I think this is the answer to the question really :)

It's only the answer to the question if you want to relate to ignorant people who don't believe that something they can't see exists.

Do you question the wind also? mavity?

With something like a fuel, and power output of a vehicle used for driving around to places, if there is no noticeable difference to the driver or passenger in any way whatsoever then there is not a difference.

...and we're all forgetting that MON is more relevant than RON, anyway!

Yup, and almost by the same token people that throw high octane fuel in a car that can't advance ignition accordingly are likely to cause as much damage as people throwing 95 in (for example) a JDM car mapped to expect 97/98 as a minimum.

Heat heat heat.

Is the cooling in modern turbos not done by synthetic oil or something which still 'moves' within the unit even after the ignition has been cut?

The reason for the cool down period is to stop the oil cooking inside the turbo. This reduces the amount of flow in the oil ways in the turbo and can lead to bearing wear/turbo failure.

Most modern turbos are water cooled which means leaving the car idling after a run is not such a big problem. After shutdown, it's convection of the water that flows around the turbo and reduces any heatspots in the turbo.

To answer the OPs question though, I always put V-Power in my car. It doesn't make any difference to performance, but when running an extra 50bhp in a 15 year old engine, I don't mind paying more for fuel which gives me that little bit more protection against det.

No, I am saying nowhere in Plymouth sells Shell VPower. I normally use Sainsburys Super Unleaded. At 2p a litre more I see no reason not to.

So why did you bring up Vpower and irregular driving habits at all?

How do you find the difference between 95, and the super you regularly use?

OT, but when did you get the 911? And where's the pics?

Its not mine, belongs to my GF (but obviously i am fairly involved in it). There are some pictures on the book of faces, but its really not worth posting, we all know what a 996 looks like.

I wish my passengers had a built in knock sensor or could monitor ignition retard and advance because i can't.............

vagcom can and its really useful.

as for ingition retard, you put your foot down, you feel the car start to pull but the pull ebbs away (science speak). i can feel mine do that on 95 ron

Yea, not really messed with logging those blocks yet, i should do really but i shall leave that until i fit my new turbo :D

Well of the cars I have had, 2 have been diesel and 1 was a 1.4 Fiesta so none of those would benefit in anyway from this. Which brings me to the last 2.

BMW 330CI - tried both types of fuel over the 2 years 4 months I had it - I never noticed any significant difference, but I do think it was a tad quieter when I'd put a tank of super through it, might just be in my head though.

Mondeo ST220 - I have owned this as of tomorrow (when I get rid of it for the Jag) for 3 months and 2 days exactly. I have run it for half of that time on BP Ultimate and half on regular BP Unleaded. I have noticed more difference than with the BMW tbh, the car is a 'little' tiny bit smoother and 'I think' a tiny bit more responsive on super, there is no difference in economy though. This is after consecutive tanks though, not just switching from one to the other.

I'll let you know about the Jag in 3 months :)

Nothing but V-Power here. I'd much rather it for the cleaning properties of the fuel etc. Plus I know that when people have mapped cars, the difference between the fuel is very noticeable. So I'd rather run the best fuel I can I guess.

I've personally never found any difference by using super unleaded apart from getting better economy from el cheapo supermarket fuel for some weird reason.

I've not decided whether to continue using supermarket fuel or to use expensive stuff. I can't tell any difference however Shell etc. would like me to believe that my engine will suffer a meltdown unless I put their finest into my tank so I guess I should do it....

Are these so called 'cleaning properties' only found in the higher octane fuel? i'd have imagined that normal fuel has them also. I would think the difference is minimal?

I run Super (V-Power) because I run a Custom Grp N 98 Ron map on the Clio and I don't mind paying the extra, it doesn't work out that much more anyway with points and vouchers.

I only put Unleaded in the Ibiza, don't see the point in a higher octane on a small engine.

I've tried V Power Diesel on the Fabia, I don't really notice a difference at all. No change in performance, no change in fuel consumption.

So I just stick to regular diesel.

When I 1st bought my ST24 I only ran it on V-Power, as i thought it would help. When I was made redundant I reluctantly decided to save a few pennies and run on the normal.

I had some very interesting results.

No change in economy or performance or the way it drove!
