Tough times for a lot of the motor trade, but kind of surprised to see such a well known brand going under. Especially given how much of their work is likely to be remotely done

always thought of them as a safe choice company for mapping and loved the idea of the bluefin units they sold.

sad times

Damn, that happened fast!

I got a bluefin for my Luton van just before the lockdown, very nice (115>150) Dont know if I use less fuel but it flies up the 417 at Birdlip now (Well, 3 weeks ago anyway) even with a load on.

Shame as I had another car I wanted having a mild remap on too and was planning to have it done after the lock down is over (Not Bluefin compatible)

I guess the problem is not so much that they need workshops to do the work rather than people are not driving at the moment and are putting off "Unnecessary" expenditure until they have a better idea what is happening.

I wonder what is happening to all their kit?

:/

Would not touch a generic map with a barge pole, amazed to see them go under though
Nothing wrong with a - good - generic map. They tend to be quite cautious and based on tonnes of data from similar vehicles. Some are even covered by the vehicle warranty. Mountune with Fords. Polestar with Volvos.

Why not? Sure if you've modified most of the intake/exhaust system and half of the engine's internals you will want something more bespoke, and you'll probably get a bit more power from a custom map, but for an otherwise unmodified car they're absolutely fine, by and large.

Superchips have an excellent reputation and this is a shame.

Looking at their accounts, their net equity dropped from £64k in March 18 to £2k in March 19. At March 17 it was £146k. This company has been losing money for years. My expectation is that by March 20 it had net liabilities, even before COVID19 hit.

That's a surprise - don't see much about them online nowadays, but looked like they were having some new building work done recently (new dyno cell maybe?) when I last drove past - assumed everything was still fine!

The rise in driveway remappers probably has some connection to this.

Why pay a couple of hundred for a proper, safe remap when "r Kev" can pop round with his Cash Converters laptop & load a map he's downloaded from some group on Facey for 50 quid....

Yup used many like that and had no issues either.

Never heard of them.

I'm surprised anyone with even a passing interest in cars hasn't at least heard of Superchips, they've been around decades

They were one of the groups who brought the idea of a 'mail order' remap into the mainstream. For most of the early 2000s they were the official VW motorsport tuning partner.

I thought to myself this had nothing to do with COVID-19. They had to have been in trouble for a long time before this to have no cash.

There does seem to be a heck of a lot of people who are happy to go this route.

If Superchips did an off the shelf product to make cars excessively pop and bang they'd be raking it in. It seems like that's all people are interested in now!

If I had to guess (and I'm guessing blindly as I don't know what products Superchips do), a lot of people have heard horror stories about the ECU having an extra bit/byte to let the dealer know how many writes the ECU has had, and would rather have a piggyback mod/tune that can be removed prior to going back to a dealer. I'm not sure if Superchips offer this, it wasnt that clear on their website.
