Come on someone enlighten me as I simply cannot understand, why would you go shopping at a supermarket and reverse park the car? How the hell are you going to get your trolley full of bags into the boot?

Well I have an answer and that is that these same numpties then try and drive the trolley between the parked car to the back of their car and assuming that they succeeded in doing this without touching/scraping the cars they then have to run the gauntlet again in order to get their quid back.

And breath :)

I’ve noticed this aswell. Everyone seems to have an obsession with reversing into a space because there scared or don’t trust there driving skills backing out of a space. Que fat people squeezing in between your car trying to get there shopping in the boot.
On a side note i was on a nice empty car park this morning with loads of spaces sat in my car along drives this woman parks next to me and proceeds to try and squeeze herself out of the tiniest of gaps she left without hitting my car :mad:. And I wonder why my car now has numerous dings on it.

Personally I only reverse into a space between cars if the amount is stuff im buying can fit in the passenger footwell.

As for other people. It might be because its easier to drive out of a parking space compared to reversing where you have to put up with blind pedestrians and inconsiderate drivers.

Indeed I always reverse into spaces purely because it’s easier to drive straight out of spaces when there are so many idiotic pedestrians and drivers around. But then I’d never do so with the intention of taking a shopping trolley to my car, I usually just have a bag or two that I dump on a seat or in the footwell. Or just use parent and child spaces (when I have my kids with me obviously).

I don’t seem to see many people reverse parking around here though. Just the usual crap parking at supermarkets but it’s mostly cars crappily parked straight on in spaces.

at our local asda there's a set of spaces round the side that despite being really close to the entrance are seldom busy and you can reverse in and the back of your car will be facing the pavement and the door.

although since switching to the grand vitara this strategy falls down when you combine the bollards and a side hinged boot meaning you can't actually open it.

You guys should come see our local morrisons.

Infact ill do you one better and illustrate it.

I reverse park because I'm a single 24 year old that lives alone and has yet to buy more than two or three bags of shopping in one trip. The rear glass in my estate opens and makes it extremely easy to put my shopping in the boot without opening the entire tailgate. It's then much easier to drive straight out of the space without having reduced visibility.

We don't buy much. Usually two or three large plastic bags for life's worth. Not exactly hard to carry those round to the boot. I usually always reverse park, although if there's a huge swathe of empty spaces at the back of a larger car park that nobody is sensible enough to venture to, it doesn't matter if you drive in forwards or backwards, it's easy to depart either way.

Rear parking is so much easier in my 5 series estate, mainly due to the size of the bonnet/engine bay.

I very rarely drive straight in to a space unless there are clear spaces either side of me

If you dont understand why people reverse park into spaces then you should consider retaking your driving test again.

Is this an age thing ? I notice younger drivers reverse park more than older ones. I don't remember being taught reverse parking (I passed my test in 1991) and suspect I'd either take forever or make a right mess of doing it. Driving forwards into the space when your visibility is good and reversing out into the much bigger space behind you when the visibility is poor just seem more logical to me.

Jaaag XJ here (not feeling the urge to get the tape measure out to compare lengths as the nearest neighbour with a 5 series might have a 'weirdo alert' .... but likely not much difference) but I find front parking easier and anything more than one bag will get put in the boot anyway, so the OP's original point about unloading the trolley is a good one.
