I'm sure most of you realise that even the moon landing is not as important to mankind as the british chocolate digestive. Namely McVities.

But I recently decided to try some supermarket mimicry, in this case, Tesco's own brand milk choc diggys.

I have to say, they're very good indeed. No complaints about the chocolate at all, very nice and creamy. The biscuit is good too. But it is missing something that only McVities gets right. Can't quite put my finger on it but the biscuit doesn't quite have the flavour of a McVities, slightly bland. Maybe it's salt, or butter, or something about the wheat or the texture or a combination of all those. It's quite subtle but enough to make me stick with McVities. But I'd probably still buy these again plus they're about a third of the price.

If you have been eating the same brand of x for years and years, then that becomes what you expect x to taste like. If you then try a different brand of x, it wont quite taste right.

They possibly taste different rather than worse.

Biscuits are something I pretty much always go "own brand" with. Maybe the branded ones are less dry though?

Same as most branded stuff really, they're nicer but wouldn't pay twice or three times as much. I'll just buy twice as many.

There is only a few things I'll buy branded, bread is one of them.

It's not really a case of what I'm used to. They're just not as good. Close but no cigar. All my other biscuits however, eg, gingernuts, Nice, shortbread, shortcake, jam and cream sandwich biscuits, Jaffa cakes, rich tea, chocolate hobnob copies, etc are all supermarket own brand and are great. But choc digestives? There's really only one choice. Same with the plain digestives.

I tend to stick to mcvities for my choccy bics.

Most supermarket stuff is fine tbh, apart from baked Beans. Branson baked beans are magnitudes better than any supermarket bean.

When it comes to packaged bread, tesco toastie and Warburtons farmhouse are king. Neither as good as a fresh tiger loaf though.

Yep, Branston beans are the best, they're not sickly sweet like Heinz or other brands. As for bread, this Oat & Barley Cob has become a favourite of mine.

Chocolate Hobnobs > *
Dont know any supermarkets that do an equivalent.

I recently polished off a pack of these and I can tell you they're excellent, probably just as good as McVities Choc Hobnobs. :) https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/259312326

Branston beans are indeed the best and now I need to try these Tesco oat biscuits
Thanks @Merlin5

When I first left home I lived on own brand stuff and other cheap and nasty packaged food (anyone remember Happy Shopper stuff in corner shops?). Nowadays I stick to branded everything, probably because of those grim times!

Chocolate covered hobnobs are a bit too sickly for me, much prefer the plain hobnobs. I don't think the Tesco own brand ones were quite as good as the original last time I tried them.

Yeah for chocolate digestives I'd have to say McVities, but bourbons are my faves to dunk and supermarket cheap ones like sainsburys basics are perfect!
