supplements, herbs and the like

Does anyone take supplements other than bodybuilding ones? What do you take and why?

A lot of modern day supplements are chemical equivalents of age old remedies that have been known and used since the year dot. Scientists trawl through e.g. Amazon plants to see if they have medicinal purposes. Extract of heroin has been used for pain relief since ancient Chinese times.
Doctors tell patients to get fish oil tabs.

Are there enough controls on them for anyone to really know what's in them?

Personally, I don't care whether a chemical is synthetic or squeezed out of a plant. If it's the same chemical, it's the same chemical. The synthetic version is probably purer.

When people say "it's natural" as if that meant it was automatically healthy, I feel an urge to scream. Cyanide is natural. Arsenic is natural. Many deadly substances are natural. Maybe I should pee in something and tell them to drink it. It's natural!

I take multivitamins and minerals because my diet is bad. They probably don't do anything anyway, even if they do actually contain what it says on the label, but maybe they do and it's only a few quid a month.

dunno..your reply was better suited to teh bloke who had a problem with chemicals.

I'm interested in what eye supplements you take. I have a condition that is widely regarded as degenerative but I believe can be made to regress or at least stop through diet.

I'm currently taking 'Astaxanthin + Blackcurrant', and along side it 'Visual Eyes' (both are available from Higher Nature). In all honesty, it doesn't especially matter what brand, as long it's of a decent strength and quality. A complex is the best place to start. Look for key words in the ingredients such as Lutein, Zinc and Vitamin C etc. Good brands are Solgar, Biocare, Pharma Nord, Viridian and so on.

Try to keep your blood sugar balanced, as too much sugar can damage the eye. Try to include the darker fruits, such as blueberries as cherries. These are rich in antioxidants such as anthocyanidins which are beneficial to eye health. Don't hesitate to email me if you need any questions answering. :)

There are cases and times where extra dietary supplementation is useful. However I would always say that sorting out your diet is more important than relying on supplementation. I eat a lot of oily fish for example, buti still like to dose on some extra omega 3s as they're fantastic for the health... However, there is no need really to take lots of supps in day to day life, unless you have a specific need, like for example you're an athlete or a sportsman and do a lot of specific taxing tasks for your body, or work night shifts and seldom get sunlight etc.... There are always extenuating circumstances for things..

Taking supps for the sake of it is a waste of money if your diet is generally good.

Not everyone responds the same way either, I don't take many supplements as I prefer a clean diet, but I have them for days when I don't have the chance to eat well or need to boost certain nutrients, however I study them extensively and do not take them without forethought and consideration and knowledge.

I'm not a proponent of dietary supplements, however they CAN have their place if used sensibly and with knowledge.

Fish Oils - every meal ( as above)
Psyllium Husk- x2 a day (aid's during dieting, colon cleansing etc)
Multi Vit - every meal (required due to deficiencies)
Vitamin C - x1 a day (suppress your body's release of cortisone)
ZMA - before bed ( enhance recovery by improving sleep efficiency)
Glucosamine Sulphate - 3 times a day (joint care)
kre alkalyn (similar to creatine monohydrate )

I take these due to stress and strain I put my body under day in day out!

I'm surprised that you feel the need to take multi vits with every meal. Presumably you have what, 5 or 6 meals per day? Each tablet is probably 100% RDA, so is that really necessary?!

Or do you use powder and only take small doses per meal?

Essentially, is an insurance plan to ensure I get all the main vitamins and minerals that for some reason If i failed to get from my food on any given day.

I use tablet form, and yes 6 meals a day. Any surplus I will urinate, I have the luxury of not needing to pay for my supplementations so if it's excessive - meh!

Crikey, what do you do?!

I think this is the problem, people see the likes of Kai/Freefaller (even kai's pee is sponsored  ) knocking back supplements and think hey look at how they look I should take them. Unfortunately without the effort in the gym most just get expensive pee.

I take the first 2 in your list. The first in the form of "Flaxseed (Linseed) Oil 1000mg" which are prescribed (for an eye problem weirdly) but don't know if make any difference. The Psyllium Husks are a lot more noticeable in their job!
