So theres always a lot of discussion in this part of the forum about supplements so this is a thread where you put down the supplements you have and why you take them. Which could then help maybe others to perhaps buying a particular supplement which may help them in their sport. I don't want this to turn into a debate where by members say you don't need this don't need that you just need a good diet etc..

So i've been bodybuilding for the past year and a half gained 2 stone and have been having the following which i'm finding are helping me out to reach my aim:

Flax seed oil:- Have two teaspoons a day reason for taking it is that its a bit like a superfood high in omega 3, 6 & 9 and all sorts of vitamins and minerals makes it far easier to reach your rda for a lot of them.

Centrum advance multivitamin:- just have the one a day no explanation needed here.

L_Glutamine:- Just have the one tablet in the morning reason for it is that its good at tissue repair and to shows its effectiveness a relative was prescribed it when she had a frozen shoulder.

N Acetyl L Cysteine:- Have about 500mg twice a day again it helps to improve recovery times and is also a powerful antioxidant which also removes free radicals so is good for the day after the night before and also promotes lean growth.

Colostrum:- have 20 grams of this a day and is not cheap but i have been adding this into my shakes and have noticed big gains and quicker recoveries within only month.. Definately recommend.

Creatine Ethyl Ester:- at the moment i have three tablets an hour before a workout and then 3 directly after. As i've only just started to use it I can't really comment if it has made any actual difference but the majority of you will have heard of this and its effects.

Nitric Oxide:- Again only had this in the last week 3 tablets in the morning 3 in the afternoon and 3 in the evening. Got to say visibly this has made a massive difference gives near enough that pump looked you get when you work out definately more definition when using this and also helps recovery times and improves endurance.

Whey Protein:- Just to help give me that extra amount of protein i need in a day.

So how about all of you out there what do you have?

P.s. for those of you that are going to jump on the band wagon and criticise me saying i probably dont have a good diet a typical day like yesterday i had the following:

09:00: Porridge with milk

11:00: Shake

13:00: Brown bread, avocado, mozzarella, parma ham, pesto, olive oil, lettuce, tomato (big sandwich)

15:00: Sushi

16:00: workout

17:30: shake

20:30: rice + home made curry

23:00: cashew nuts

Plus around 2-3 litres of water

Omega 3- Dont eat/cant afford much oily fish
Whey- Cheap source of protein

Considering taking some creatine considering I eat very little red meat otherwise not too bothered on other stuff. I remember seeing a similar thread on a bodybuilding forum and one guy was taking 20+ tablets a day lol.

Did it make any difference? surely body just wants to dispose most of it if you are having an overload of the stuff?

The only supplement I've ever used is Whey, haven't bought any for months though.

Edit: Oops, I have tried creatine but proved to have no additional benefits. Freefallers coffee and banana before workout tip has been most useful!

mostly all your supplements are aimed at helping recovery time. how do you even know they all are working. surely it would be better to test them all out on an individual basis, see which ones work better than others and only use the ones which are most cost effective.

you dont need most of the stuff if your using a decent protein powder, as the powder will have lots of glutamine, etc already in it. i would seriously think about cutting it down.

plus there has been a big debate about vitamins and whether they actually work in tablet form. so your multi vit could be doing nothing. if your diets fine, then all you need is a decent powder.

also i see no fruit in your diet. an apple every 2 days, banana's in shakes, fruit juice, will help you a lot more than all this "fake" stuff.

i forgot to add i do add a banana into my shakes but must confess unless im near one of those shops which makes freshly made fruit smoothies i dont really have that much fruit.. i used to but got a bit lax on that side of things just time really!

But i do agree i probably could cut out the l_glutamine but in respect to the others i take they all have added different benefits as opposed to just helping recovery time.

your using time as an excuse? the time it takes to wash an apple? or the time it takes to pour and drink a glass of fruit juice? yet you have the time to take 100 different supplements?

i reckon i could wash and cut an apple in less than a minute, then 2 minutes to eat it. i also have a juicer at home but it hardly gets used due to setup and cleaning time. its easier just buying fruit juice from asda, although it may not be as healthy, the difference wont be that much. a lot of people are mis-informed about fruit juice and say it has a lot of sugar, or not to drink concentrate, etc. its natural sugar, not the same sugar you find in coke, and just because it has been concentrated then the water added back to it, doesnt mean its suddenly became unhealthy, obviously fruit juice which is natural will be better, but there wont be much in it.

also jordan's cereals have fruit and nuts already in them, which is an easy way to add some more into your diet.

well i'm not talking fruit juice have a glass of apple juice in the morning and orange juice once home so in theory i get 3 a day but what i mean is having proper fresh fruit!

the only fresh fruit i like are apples, mango's, banana's, melon and grapes.

so i have the odd piece now and again, but i rely on fruit juice for the rest. i know its not as good but this is what works for me.

i will though however put strawberries and other fruits which i dont like to eat into protein shakes, they taste better as a smoothie.

With a balanced diet and plenty of sleep, I have everything I feel I need.

I take fish oil supplements to tell my conscience I'm doing everything I can to ward off prostrate cancer and heart disease. Although I suspect cycling 50 miles a week wil ldo more for the latter than any supplements will.

If your diet is crud and you're not getting enough sleep, supplements will help (as the - get this - supplement your existing dietary intake), but you may eventually reap the rewards of an unbalanced diet (nasty intestinal problems, for instance).

For supplements to help THAT much, your initial diet pre-game plan can't have been great, IMHO.

And by the look of your current example diet, you're making up for not eating enough with those shakes. ;)

Instead of making a new thread:

What Whey brand do people use? Which is known for being good value for money and quality? Taste doesn't bother me that much.

Ive used my protein, allin1 (rebranded reflex thats no longer for sale) and bulkpowders all good value for money.

Also used STC but turned out they were getting dodgy product so overall bad quality and lots of carbs/sweeteners (Got refunded and well treated though).

Yes, allin1 is has ceased trading as I stated :p. That is myprotein own brand indeed, use this code: "MP195355" for 5% off.

Cheers mate, any suggestions for what flavour to take?

I'm sure they all taste as horrid as each other :D

Oh, and I thought you meant the reflex wasn't for sale any longer

Oh sorry, I can see how it could be misinterpreted. Reflex is still for sale but if I recall correctly its very expensive (also the banana flavour aint great).

As for myprotein flavours I used to just neck down unflavoured after the gym but I've now got some chocolate. Yet to open the chocolate though but I imagine it will taste about the same. I find strawberry flavour of other whey's tends to be very sweet / not great. Also if you pricematch with www.bodybuildingwarehouse.co.uk and they're in stock you can get 5kg flavoured whey for £35

Awesome, well i'll give the impact whey a try, will order some tomorrow. I'll pick a random flavour and hope for the best, maybe read through some reviews and see what they suggest.
