...instead of buying one right. Because, buying one is illegal. And using one without a licence is also illegal. So I build this rifle, and it's a nice rifle. And I never use it, however, it's mine and I never purchased it.
Can the police still nick me for anything related with the rifle I built? :p

Yes because it is classed as a fire arm.

Spud guns are classed as a fire arm and can be taken from you

If a spud gun is classed as a firearm then it would mean 5 years inside  , i dont think they are though some how :p . If you built a class 1 firearm i think you would be in trouble as well, even if there is no ammo as it could be used to fire ammo. Just like the Brocock TAC guns are now illegal as they can be converted to fire live ammo.

Saying that though my uncle has a 410 shotty on his wall and a WW2 lee enfield 7.62 rifle and has no FAC  . The police were called to his house for reasons i wont go into, they saw the guns and didn't seem to care.

Yes.

Any component part is illegal to own be it a firing pin, cocking handle, moderator / silencer, or anything deemed a component part.

Man you ain't allowed to have any fun these days. I won my first spud gun when I was 8 at a campsite in cumbria used it to shoot those damned earwigs off the tent at night hehe also shooting my brothers was fun as well until they overpowered me and shot me back :(

I'm guessing what you mean is would you be done for buying a gun?

No you wouldn't, but you'd be done for owning and making one.

It would probably see a worse sentance than just buying one too :p

Was that the WW2 bomb in his back garden? Or him dressed up as a german SS soldier whilst doing the gardening?

Wasn't the WWII Lee Enfield rifle chambered for .303 ? Later versions when used as a sniper rifle were chambered for 7.62 but if I remember correctly it was not that claibre during the war.

Correct - they weren't chambered for 7.62mm (in the UK anyway) until the fifties IIRC.

But back to the original question: a firearm is a firearm is a firearm, no matter how you obtained it. Simple possession is an offence in itself, even if you made it.

Not sure, it was ages ago when i saw it, he said it was 7.62 but he doesnt really know anything about guns same as me. It looked in really good condition too to say its so old, it even had a little cleaning kit in the butt iirc.

the point being aside, how do you know if this "firearm" that you have built is capable of discharging a shot? if it isn't, or isn't capable of withstanding the firing pressure, (and then explode) it's not classed as a firearm.

i think that they would then be called replicas, but i'm not sure. (its a legal grey area).

<edit>

Also, the .303 round technically is a 7.62 round.

the 7.62 only designates the nominal round diameter, not the round type.
as such, there are many different "7.62" rounds, some of which are for pistols, some of which are for rifles.

the .303 british has a metric designation of 7.62x56r (the "r" stands for rimmed) while the 7.62 nato is 7.62x51, and the 7.62 luger is 7.62x21ball.
