Surface Pro 6 v Laptop

@String

How are you getting on with the Surface?

Thinking of getting one for my daughter for college. She's been using my Lenovo X1, although it's light she's doesn't have space for it in her backpack. Thought about an Android tablet, something like the Tab S4, but a Windows tablet would probably be better.

Yes, I'm glad I moved to Windows for my use case, mainly access to office applications. It does have a few quirks though:

  • When you click on a search bar like Google then the on-screen keyboard opens but it closes when you hit the first key then you need to open it again.
  • The screen is nice but isn't as nice as the Tab S4.
  • The Windows store apps are non existent and this has only affected me in one instance so far where I can't download Prime Video to watch offline.

In summary, as an all round versatile device I think it's unbeatable. I can sit it on my dining room table with a Bluetooth keyboard & mouse and use it as a fully functional laptop. I can sit it on my desk and hook it up to my 2560*1440 monitor and use it as a fully functional PC with extended dual screens. I can sit it on my lap and use it as a tablet and consume media - but this is where I feel the compromise is.

Incidentally, I think this is what a Windows phone should have been but the hardware just wasn't/isn't quite there yet. But if you could have a phone that could work like a Surface, it would be the perfect device.

A little update on my experience

- the battery life isn't great and it takes up to a couple of hours to charge.
- when watching media (Sky Go, iPlayer, Netflix) the back of the device gets really hot.

I thought it worth a mention for anyone who is weighing up the same choice I had. :)

unfortunately the new intel 4 core cpu are battery hogs, the older 2 core cpu from last years surface pro 2017 model have 3 extra hours battery life.

I usually find 35% screen brightness and in battery saver mode, i can get extra 2 hours out of it.

if you think this is bad then the 15" surface book 2 when detached has a 3 1/2 hours battery life if you are lucky and doing every trick in the book for extended battery minus turning the damn thing off
.

really Microsoft:eek:

im deciding on selling my ipad pro and getting one of these, what are your thoughts on it after using it for a while? im deciding between this and a surface laptop 2

I've used an iPad Pro with keyboard and in my opinion the Windows device is streets ahead in terms of productivity and the cross over to laptop/tablet hybrid. However, for media consumption and the tablet experience, the iPad wins.

It really depends on how you intend to use it.
