I want to change my Surname, I've no problem with freinds/family but I'm concered how it might play out professionally.

I'm looking to know if you were about to start a new job would you do it before contracts were drawn up or wait till you've been there for a few months?

Have you hired someone before, if so how would you take a name change between interview stage and contract signing?

In with the obvious question everyone will ask, why do you want to change your surname? Is it something awkward like Mr Phallus?

*edit* Oh and if I were to ever do this, I'd do it before starting work so everyone didn't think you were weird changing your Surname.

Can't advise till we know the details, I.e what is your surname and what would you like it to be?

I knew a man called Fred Smells. He hated all the grief he got over this name so he changed it.

Geoff Smells is now much happier.

It's not a weird change it's just Fathers to Mothers side.

Ah fair enough, my advice still stands. Do it before changing jobs so it doesn't turn into a pain in the arse having to explain to every colleague why you changed your surname when your old email address doesn't work.

Um...

Im pretty sure this won't be a new thing to any organisation, most women who get married have been doing this for years, and its never been a problem.

Do it at your own convenience, don't worry about any employment thing or anything, they will deal with it just like they deal with any other name change.

I'm not worried that the companies HR wouldn't be able to cope, this thread is specifically about how it would be taken by whoever hires me.

To further expain I'm just worried that a company taking a chance on me would be put off and not take me on, I should have done it before applying but everything happens quicker than you want.

How easy is something like this to get done? But to the original post i cant see it being an issue, as skeeter has said women do it when they get married or divorced.

Edit- further to the post above mine, surely a name change wouldnt effect your abilitys to do the job, so it shouldnt be an issue.

Personally I wouldn't really care if someone I hired was changing their surname. Sure, for a couple of seconds I'd consider it a ball ache but then life moves on and I honestly don't think anyone would give a ****.

I have a similar problem but much more complicated... I have a passport in my birth name, driving licence in my mums maiden name and all my qualifications in her name as well.

I don't have a clue how my mum did if at the time but no one wants to know now I want everything in my birth name... The only way I can see how she did it is her name is on my birth certificate as mothers maiden name... Unfortunaly a birth certificate is not good enough to get my name changed on my driving licence!!!
