In response to this thread: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17841423 I'm curious as to what games were for you the stella opposite of a huge let down. What for you, came as a pleasant surprise in terms of actually turning out to be really very good?

For me it would have to be:

1) Eye of the Beholder (1 & 2 only - 3 was rubbish)
2) Baldurs Gate 2
3) Return to Castle Wolfenstein
4) Neverwinter Nights
5) World of Warcraft

All of these game for me have huge replayability - WoW is an obvious one as it never really ends, but I often find myself going back to the other games and running through them again just for the hell of it.

Suprising to me are -

1) Company of Heroes (I heard absolutely NOTHING about this game, saw a demo was released but didnt download, saw a review posted that gave it really high marks, then 1 day i got bored and got the demo, my oh my, after getting past the IM THICK part, i found the most awesome RTS game in ages).

2) Penumbra: Overture

3) Stranglehold

4) GRAW1 PC (Screw you, i like it :p).

Savage.. Nothing like anything I expected!
Q3 Pong :D
The Prince of Persia games

:)

Hadn't heard of it until someone brought it along to a LAN party at my house...I think we spent virtually the entire night playing it whilst the guy who was already good at it took the **** out of us with a chainsaw :)

edit: God damn it uv..stop hogging all the posts :D

WoW was/is my first MMO. Surprisingly "addictive". :D

Freelancer I was expecting something crap (I find most space games are) but it's actually quite a neat little game with a good storyline.

I remember buying KKND2 as it was £2.99 in the sale and I thought "this is going to be shocking" - well it wasn't, in fact it's a really good strategy game, good fun to play.

It has to be Portal. Especially if you didn't read anything about it beforehand and played it as what you thought was simply an Orange Box filler. Completely blew me away.
I'd also make a case for Trackmania as a slow-burner. Played the first one years ago and thought it was alright. Somehow I'm still playing it now, when a thousand other games have come and gone.

Richard Burns Rally - I thought it would be just another racing game, It's Not. Turns out to be the ultimate driving game on the PC even to this day. Nothing compares to it.

BF2 - Sounded good Turned out Perfect, No other game has even come close for Infantry FPS since it's release. It shocks me how many hours i have logged on this game & shocks me even more that i still play it regularly.

CoH
Supcom
Civ4
CoD4
Red Orchestra Ostfront ( shame my free steam time ran out for it :( )
Far Cry ( I found it a bit boring @ first, I didn't go past the first 3 levels till after 4 years after release, now I see how superb this game was all the way through)
BF1942 + all mods ( Desertcombat, Forgotten hope, eve of destruction to name a few)
Bf2 ( Yes I still loved it)
Mohaa:Spearhead : Still great quick shooter.
Rise of Nations: Surprise strategy game, never heard anything about it till I seen it in shop and bought it, was great online.
Worms world party & armageddon: Still play it to this day.
GTA games, all of em, especially SA, Vice and SA weren't a surprise, I knew the GTA games were *** best games ever, but b4 I got gta3 I never knew they were so good, I was kind of like: OMG this is cool when I first played GTA3.

Live for speed: Coming from arcadey games I didn't expect much, this is a superb sim though.
Sim city 4: Was stumped when I discovered Simtropolis, I lived the game ever since.
Mafia: Same story as gta 3.

And there are hundreds of more games I'd like to mention, but my post would become too long...

Freelancer - I loved that game, the music and atmosphere top class and I loved it when I found a space depot called Cardiff!

Gunman Chronicles - Didnt have brill reviews but I love it and still own it.

BF2 - Spent most of 2006 playing it :]
GuildWars - Finished the 10hrs free trial in one sitting then played it non stop for 6 months
WoW - Only recently started playing, really enjoying it apart from some n00bs in a dungeon last night giving me grief for being crap:/
More to come...

I always owned sega/nintendo consoles so a couple of years ago I bought a ps2 to try. Remember buying FFX without knowing much about it and it was by far the best game i've purchased without knowing much about a game

CS.. back then i used to play rogue spear.. didn't really see the point in other fps games...tried it offline, didn't see anything special ....... went online and omg thousands of players, very little lag (dedicated servers something rs was seriously lacking) and just an amazing game.

ultima online... i expected this game to be good... but good doesn't do justice to how amazing it was to play an mmo for the first time... totally out of this world

World of Warcraft, was skeptical when i started as i previously tried some beta games and Dark age of camelot but the combat system made it highly addictive for me.

Call of duty 4 - After not playing any other series of the game i felt i had to at least play the latest game and i loved it. was totally unexpected for me. good job a i tossed a coin and it was between gears of war and Cod4.

KotOR - Simply the best RPG i have played. i never really liked most RPG games now i am a bit older and have less time to diffuse on games but Knights of the old republic was superb masterpiece.

Evil Genius - I never bought this as a kid as my pc never ran it very well and could never afford games. but when i played the demo i had so much fun in. I recently purchased to game for a few quid and i was amazed at the quality and how good it was.
