Very little knowledge on this so any advice/guidance would be greatly appreciated as ever.

I would like a surround sound set-up for watching DVD's and TV.

Now I have a Toshiba 32WL56 used with freeview (soon to replaced with TVDrive) and a Pioneer 585A DVD.

Budget is between £250.00 to £300.00 so obviously not looking for top of the range here :) ........but a nice set-up.

So what do I need?......amplifier or receiver?

I have seen a Yamaha and Denon receivers (I think) with speakers around about the £250.

For your budget either of those would do, think the Yam pack is AV57?

That would be a good start, IMO

Cheers Andy.........yes think its the AV57.

Is the A57 for a better word 'plug and go' if you know what I mean :)

Yeah for the money its excellent, its just right to get you going.

Maybe when you are happy and feel ready for an upgrade the
amp will still be going strong so just upgrade the speakers!

So yes for now its plug and play but the amp will still drive
better speakers when your ready to change ;)

Good value for money too, should have some left over to
get a dencent camera ;) (joke)

Thanks Andy.........will start looking around to see if anyone has stock of the A57...got a feeling it maybe discontinued.

New Camera lol.........yes thing its about time I bought a new one.....my 1DMKII is about 6 months old ;)

Check out Richer Sounds to see if they have anything in your price bracket. I also use a company called Superfi, they sometimes have some good offers on.

No luck with the AV57.......out of stock everywhere I have tried.

No luck either trying to get hold of a Denon DHT-1356XP :(

It looks as though I might have to go for seperate receiver & speakers.........

Looking at the Yamaha NSP110 speakers with either the Denon 1706/1906 receiver.........unless anyone else can advise of a better combination around the same price. ;)

Cheers Andy. appreciate it.

Had no luck over the weekend either trying to source the Denon DHT 1356XP.

Considered the Denon DHT500SD but as I have just bought a new DVD player I think it counts that one out.......and that would push the budget upto £400.00.

So its still down to the Denon 1706 & 1906........recommendations on the net appear to advise to bypass the 1706 and go for the 1906.

As for speakers..........are the Yamaha NSP110 speakers going to be good enough with the 1906.

One store did have the Denon speakers in split from the DHT 1356 package..........I wonder if they would be worth purchasing.

I'd be looking for something slightly better than the Yamaha speakers to do the Denon justice. They won't be bad, but you could do a whole lot better.

For the canton's have a look at the powerbuy on the speakers section of www.avforums.com

I have the CD1s (old model) and they are a great little speaker for the money, many people rate them over the KEF eggs and they cost less

Looks like its going to cost me a little more than I anticipated:o

Guess you get what you pay for at the end of the day.

Cheers for the suggestions......will have a look when I am home from work.

Agreed, the part that would have let you down on the AV57 pack
was the speakers, TBH they aint up to much.

As above check out power buy on the cantons, they are around
450 delivered IIRC, and well worth the money :)
