surround sound

Kind of budget? £30? £300?

If you want it for both PS3 and 360, then you'll want at least 2x optical inputs.

Logitech Z5500, I've had mine for about 5 years now and they're one of the best purchases I ever made, don't think they can be beaten for that price really.

For £200 I'd be tempted to start looking at some decent home cinema kit, there are lots of second hand bargains to be had and they'd perform a lot better than PC speakers or anything like that. With £200 you might not get surround, but a good 2.0/2.1 system would be possible, and a lot better quality, as well as expandable when you have the cash. A suitable A/V receiver would also take care of your freeview/sky/cable and DVDs.

I suppose it depends on the Op, i prefer a my headset to speakers and theres always the possiblity that the noise may be a problem from speakers, too loud annoy the neigbours/kids/wife etc etc

In a simular boat my self and this recently came up, ive ordered it myself and its hdmi 1.4 and it has 4 hdmi inputs on the unit its self, looking at the reviews and price he got a lot of "heat" ;-) on a website it can be had for £239.99:

I fail to see how the Z5500 can win out over hi-fi or home cinema kit, only that they're a bit cheaper. I haven't ever heard them though, but have the people recommending them ever heard new home cinema kit (e.g. the Onkyo kit suggested)?

I use it because there isn't an alternative, but I couldn't recommend a mixamp.

  • You really have to watch the levels going into it to avoid distortion sometimes this means your only option is turning the balance way over into voice.

  • I haven't found a single 240v>5v PSU in my possession that doesn't make the voice amp hum/buzz.

  • The battery compartment is awful with no separation ridges and a retaining screw instead of a clip which is a shame since it eats rechargeables.

  • What I assume to be a low pass filter (the wart in the 360 controller connection lead) is way to aggressive. Although I haven't outright confirmed it yet by trying a straight 2.5mm>2.5mm stereo lead.

  • Lacks the ease of basic functions of the XBL headset, there is no mute or single action voice level adjustment.

I currently run it off a 12v 7ah power pack with a 12v cigarette lighter>USB converter in it not the most attractive of solutions.

hook up to my ps3 and 360

Are you going to watch movies or just play games?

If you are going to kick back and watch movies then a home cinema set up would be more suited, if you are puerly going to play games then I would suggest a Dolby headset instead like the Astros I posted earlier.

ummm are you talking about the Astros as I have 0 of the issues you have just posted

That looks interesting (I've been after an entry level amp / speaker, loads of HDMI and doesn't use about 250watts when used).

By the looks of things it doesn't support HD bitstream format audio, but does anyone know if it can do LPCM (so I could still say use a lossless 5.1 / 7.1 mixed down FLAC file over HDMI)

Thanks
