Surround sound

Also;

Is there any guide on the best way to set this up?

For this set up is it just plug everything in, then eventually few stuff to tweak it fine (i'm complete newbie to home cinema so assuming everything just plugs and you're ready to go nothing to change before it?)

Is it 'safe' to plug in av etc and have it on without a subwoofer? (everything got delivered today, expected deliver of subwoofer cable is like 3 days away :|)

(or without any speakers at all?)

What happens if both touch? :p (worst case scenario to see if its worth checking)

Death. A black hole will open up and swallow the Earth. :p

Seriously though. It shouldn't cause any damage, as most if not all amps now have protection against shorting the cables together. Best to avoid doing that though, if possible. :p

Yes, you can use it without the subwoofer. There will be an option to send the bass to the front left and right speakers, if no sub is present. Although, there would be little point doing that, as such small satellite speakers are incapable of putting out any lower bass frequencies. It's more an option for people with larger bookshelf or floor standing speakers.

What about no speakers at all? :P

Hopefully putting the cabling up later so don't wish to cut it etc until i've got the speakers wall mounted, but wish to have a look and see everything is fine and check out a few things.

Also, how do the banana plugs work from what i've seen on various places the binding post has a black plug inside it (which you should be able to pull out) but there's no hole to enter something in an attempt to pull it out and there's no way of getting in the side to pop it out.

Any ideas? :P

Thanks again.

I unscrewed the outside part, it goes to the end then you can't take it out any further as a black bit prevents it from coming further out

Avathar, I went for the LG BD650 in the end. Not yet had chance to test it out, subwoofer cable doesn't arrive until saturday at earlier (might go buy QED 6m one from tesco for £14 tomorrow) and I'll do wiring for the speakers later when I get a chance to put them upto see exact lengths :P

Nope the binding posts screw so far out then stop, there's a small inward 'dent' in the middle of the black cap but there isn't a hole to insert anything in order to pull it out.

Nvm just forced the screwdriver in to push them off seems fine :p

So turning it on with no subwoofer and no speaker outputs should be fine?

Thanks, used that and had audio out set to TV :P

It's not set to amp, after about 2 minutes it started a high pitch squeel, the subwoofer isn't plugged in so could this be the cause?

Soon as i change it back to TV it's fine

Turned it back to amp again now to see if it'll last.

edit; could be related not sure, but i put my new WDTV on and nothing displayed (says its on, no display, this happened when the squeel started after i changed back to sky/xbox it continued squeeling).

Ok doesn't seem to be squeeling at all any more just one off.

However 1 final issue, I can't hear anything from the surround speakers (front 2 and center are fine).

The + and - match on speakers and AV, if I go on to AV settings and do the test it makes a sound on both but they're not actually making any noise when watching tv?

Yeh it was set to stereo

I changed it to multi channel stereo (could use PLII, DTS Neo etc) and thats fixed it.

Is there a 'preferred' mode or is it just personal preference?
