Hello gamers,

Please spare a few moments to answer the thread title's question.

'If you turn the music off for a FPS game (at any point), why do you do so?'

Please give examples of the FPS games you do this for and the reasons why.

The results and posts within the thread may be used and quoted in my University dissertation on First Person Shooter Soundtracks, and by posting in this thread you are agreeing to participate with consent.

I usually dont in 90% of the games, but in space empires 4 and 5, i just turn it off cos it's poor music imo, I juts run my own music after.

In most games though, music is decent enough to run it.

Also sometimes in other games I turn it off cos I;m listenign to mtv, and prefer to hear that for the moment than the game's music, but always once I'm done with tv, I turn the music back on.

EDIT: Sorry: Didnt read the fps bit, in fps agmes i dont turn music off.

The quake series I played without music.

Halflife I couldn't imagine without the music as its not "full blown music" more "atmospheric".

I turn off *all* the sound in some games when I want pure quick reactions (CS 1.6 for example), but I then put on some very fast paced trance or something.

if i'm playing unreal tournament or something similar competitively i will turn the music off so i can hear my opponent/s running about so i know where to aim before i see them, if im just having fun and don't care about the score i will have the music on.

I turn it off because it generally ruins the immersion. If I want to imagine I'm fighting aliens in a deserted atmosphere processor, I know there's not going to be piped music the whole time.

One of the few I've left on was Republic Commando, because it was so well done and added to the whole cinematic experience.

I do it so i can hear my enemies easier and then locate them :), in my favourite fps (ravenshield) being able to hear footsteps helped GREATLY.
Music is good for mindless fps games like quake etc, music is bad for tactical games like ravenshield :)

Seems rather silly completely removing one of your in game senses. After all, i listen for gunfire to give me an indication of the enemies location, you can here grenades rattling at your feet and someone creeping towards you around a corner. Why would you not want that?

Yeah I understand that, but on maps like aim_map where you don't use sound I find really fast paced music gives you a higher state of awareness. It does me anyway.

Obviously in a match the sounds stays ON, only goes off if I'm playing public and want to work on my reactions/predicting game.

if your quick enough noise doesnt matter. I've spent plenty of time running round like a gimp moving my mouse up and down to some good frantic euphoria, and been able to kill people just as quick/quicker as if i was slowly waiting for them to pop round that corner.

If i hear, and wait, i get too nervous and miss the key shot.
If i run round like a prat and look at everything that catches my eye im more relaxed and find controlling my trigger finger easier :/

Then again stealth is probably easier for pure "i want to play to win" sessions.
For the odd night of fun fast music and little sound = bliss :D

Exactly! Put it a bit better than me :D

:D

also when you come out of the music state, your reactions are multiplied, plus an extra sense (sound) and your well onto a winner for a quick match or something :D

I usually turn music off in all games, it's rubbish, then i just leave Itunes running in *** background. I usually up voice and sound effects so I can still here people running up behind me.

In a single player game I don't turn off the music as it takes away from the cinematic experience. This is of course talking about 'story mode' where the sound is just as important as everything else. Sometimes different music acts as a warning and if recognised often can be very helpful or even add to the atmosphere (if certain music plays when an enemy is nearby can be both helpful and scary).

In a muliplayer game, or single player(against bots), I will turn the music off and listen to some of my own music. Makes the time in between rounds(if i die) less boring. Also nothing is more fun than fragging to your own music, especially if it somehow synchs.

I wont turn music off in multiplayer however if the music is helpful in someway, like a warning or something.

As many others have said, I turn off the in game music when playing in official games of UT2004 or other online games. Single player I leave it on for the immersion.

For playing other online games such as Battlefield 2142, I listen to my own music in the background.
