Survey: If you turn the music off for a FPS game, why do you do so?

Depends on the game and my mood, generally for fast-paced games like Unreal I'll listen to the in-game music or something of a similar tempo, but with CS and the like I turn the music off so I can hear footsteps etc.

single player games it stays on. multiplayer its off. i can hear better.
What he said, but always off in the main menu (almost as annoying as sound in websites imo).

Always leave on the single player music as it's most likely a key component of atmosphere creation or some other gameplay mechanic.

For multiplayer I almost always leave it off unless audio based positioning isn't vital or if the lack of music kills the tension, e.g. Supreme Commander; gotta love the epic song that plays when your are on the offence :D.

Never really play my own music when gaming, same reasons as above.

I turn off *all* the sound in some games when I want pure quick reactions (CS 1.6 for example), but I then put on some very fast paced trance or something.

CS is one of the games where you actually need sound, with good sound its easy why some people think others are wall hacking.

CS with no sound is a no go ;)

I only ever turn it off the background music in BF2 & Mods. Don't know why but it sounds really loud when i'm chatting away on Vent and that infernal racket is playing

i'll keep it on (but quiet) for single player stuff.

For multiplayer, theres no such thing as music in any game for me including mmo's. If the area im in is silent i want it to be silent so i can hear any changes instead of annoying music.

CS was a game where for publics i did listen to music of my own and turned off in game sounds, other way round for matches. Others like the battlefield series i turned off music because it got in the way of ingame sounds as well as voice communications.

I used to turn off music most of the time, in the good ol days of Sof2 (damned I loved that game). Now I Enjoy abit of music to get the addrenaline going in some games, or just to plain act stupid and have a laugh when im messing around. I rarely play for competition stats nowadays.

I find listening to music when playing games is too "messy"..I like to be doing really simple things when listening to music.. or nothing at all. When listening to music when gaming I tend to a headache.

I turn music off in any deathmatch FPS game for two main reasons:

1) So it doesn't mask the sounds my opponents make
2) Increased framerate

For singleplayer I normally leave it on to enhance the atmosphere - some devs make pretty good use of it (e.g. Unreal).

id usually play a game once playing it properly but the second time id probably just have music. Just to keep me interested i think. I used to listen to it a lot while playing cs but again because theres a bit of sitting around in cs so to keep me interested and helps me just play

Leave it on for singleplayer, unless it gets really annoying. Always off instantly for multiplayer though, so I can hear my enemy.

I take my music off only if i don't like it or if it is a intense game which requires quick reactions and you need to listen to the footsteps and gunfire and not the music. I take my music off in games like css, DoD and stuff like that.

I turn it off in games like Unreal Tournament, rather have my own soundtrack.
(This is just down to me prefering my own music :D )

I've turned off music in FEAR and TDU - as i like the "Kabooom" in FEAR , n TUD as i like the engine sounds :P...
