Hi, I built this PC 'round about 7 or 8 months ago, and it was working fine one day until all of a sudden windows explorer stopped responding over and over again, within a VERY short amount of time.

I found out the cause to be a windows update, which I fixed by reinstalling windows, BUT, since then, all hell has broken loose. I'm having trouble installing loads of programs, some wont even start, or some crash as soon as you click the button to open them, without the programs even starting (you just get the crash message) some, like 3DS max, for example, you click to open, and..nothing happens. At all. No crash message, the programs doesnt even seem to begin to start. I have tried reinstalling windows a few times since, and jut get the same errors. All I can put it down to myself is a Hardware error or virus that has got under the bonnet and cannot be gotten rid of. I even reformatted when I reinstalled windows.

It's installed on a SSD, but I dunno if that's the problem, as I know some fail easily. Anyone able to help...? I have no idea what i'm doing or how to diagnose problems. I have tried a few diagnosis programs, but they all come back fine.

Anyone come across anything similar? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

EDIT: Sorry if this is the wrong thread, Ive never been much good as navigating forums.

Thanks for the tip. Tip. Came up with some errors, will look into it. Like I say, I don't know much, but it seems a bizaar problem to arise from dodgy ram. I'll report back when ive run it.

The problems you're having are typical of bad ram

What ram do you have? Some need more voltage than normal to run properly..
I've got OCZ DDR2 stuff and it's rated 2.2v, my motherboard default is 1.8v, so I have to set it to +0.4 in the bios or it's unstable

Aha..thanks for the help. I have removed one of the offending sticks, as it was errors, and it seems to be running better now, but I am still having problems opening 3DS max 2012 for some reason, which I never had before. Odd. But looks like some other cause for that. Shall have to have a play. But thanks for the help so far!

I have...Corsair DDR3 Dual Channel (2 4-gig sticks) So shall have to see about getting it replaced. I never had problems with the ram for the past few months, so I doubt the voltage is the problem. Not that I would know, like.

I didn't realise just HOW bad it could be..Well, thanks for all the help, it seems to have worked. Not got round to sorting all programs yet, but will get there. In a way i'm sort of glad this happened, as now I know more. Yes, I am sad. Thanks again all, such quick and precise help!
