Welcome back to fabulous, unique Suzuka as the host of the Japanese Grand Prix. There have been some great, great races there in the past, but this season has been so unpredictable that I've given up trying to forecast who's going to win each race. Here's my preview.

The Japanese Grand Prix has moved back from Fuji to Suzuka this year. Although Fuji will always be remembered for the downpours that greeted the 1976 and 2007 F1 races, Suzuka has had its share of wet weather as well.

Very heavy rain fell in 1994, almost causing the race to be abandoned. And showers hit the races in 1988, 1995 and 2000. In 2004 qualifying had to be moved after typhoon Ma-on hit the circuit on Saturday.

There is rain in the area at the moment and it is expected to remain until Friday at least. There is a reduced chance that further rain could liven up qualifying on Saturday, but early indications are that race day will remain dry. We’ll know more as we get closer to the day.

Engine List
Engines - who has how many left?
Each driver may use a maximum of eight engines this season. Anything beyond that and they get a ten-place grid penalty per additional engine. With just three races remaining, most drivers are getting near the end of their allocation - and one has already exceeded it - meaning reliability will play an increasingly important role as the 2009 campaign approaches its finale.

Below is a list of how many new engines each driver has used thus far. If you drive a Renault or a Toro Rosso, then things are looking pretty rosy. If your name is Vettel or Kubica, however, then you are probably slightly worried. The one unknown, of course, is how many of each driver’s used engines is still useable - and how much life each has left in it…

Well no he is not a muppet he has saved a set of intermediate tires for Sat, where as the others that went out have lost a set for nothing, now brawn has the advantage.

how do you figure that out. They have testing time and setup advantage. Something Brawn don't. set-up time and practice is far more important than saving a pair of intermediates. Especially if it's dry tomorrow and wet for eh race. Even if it's wet all the way through. They are behind the others. Regardless of tyres.

Especially seining as they said it's in case he wiped out and not to conserve tyres.


They have 4 sets of intermediates. More than enough especially as they can use one set over multiple practices if they wish.

Its the drivers that fine tune the car to their style of racing.

Exactly which is why the car is not tuned at present if they don't use qauli. That fine tune is where you make the difference and one where brawn have thrown a way an opportunity where he others have not.
 
Not fine tuned no but nither are the other cars as they went out and did nothing but wast a set of tires.
Second practice was reduced to just 13 minutes of action but they wasted a set of tires.
.

No, they gathered data. And if it is dry then they don't need inters and if it is wet then they have lost 13mins of running, where they don't really need fresh tyres.

Where's the penalties for the Brawns?
Nowhere... oh shock horror....

Personal fastest sector in the sector that had the yellow flags flying. Should be 14th and 15th.

Thats the danger of going out last. Someone bins it and you're shafted.

It wasn't just the brawns, wasn't it all apart from 2 drivers. It was also only personal best sectors as that was first lap for all of them. I be surprised if there is any penalty. As it would affect so many drivers.
 
#f1 Just spoken to Ross Brawn. He says neither Button nor Barri lifted off for yellow flags. I expect a penalty for quite a few drivers

From the live timing I believe Button had the fastest middle sector through/under the yellow flag...

Yep def not good. be interesting what they do. If they punish like 6 drivers how would they work out who starts where? As if those times are stripped they have no fall back lap.
