Swap to AMD setup?

Windows is not OEM :-)

And yes, the reinstall with an alternative motherboard/chip would be annoying, but only to my wife lol.

Availability of parts would certainly be an issue.

off-topic> TBH I think a lot of this hinges on what happens with my power supply that blew up recently. If I end up having to buy a new one, I won't be able to do anything lol. But then there is the credit card and add it to the bills :p

Right.. I'm gonna go Intel route, it will be much less painful for me.

I know everyone has more or less said the same but I would go quad if that were me and maybe spend the money I saved on a new gfx card dependant on what your current one is. Cheap and cheerful upgrade that should last you a wee bit longer!

Also I ahve a P2 965 which is phenominal!

But buying an AM3 now surely isn't the best option? It;s a dead platform now isn't it? Just like the 1156 and 1366

How is it a dead platform?

How are any dead? Show me a single thing that they cant do!

PII X4's are more than adequate for gaming, i5 even more so.

i7 8/9XX is still kind for encoding/heavily CPU intensive stuff.

Good luck with the search for a Q6600, and good luck with the build :)

Just to conclude this thread. I bought a Intel Q6600 in the end as I preferred to not have to swap my motherboard for various reasons. Pretty happy so far, and BFBC2 plays nicely now :-)

last week i sold my Q6600 for a phenom II x2 560 witch stock is better than my q6600.
in windows 7 64bit score.
Q6600 score was 6.5, the phenom II x2 is 7.1
XMS2 score was 6.1, new corsair value DDR3 7.5
All my games run the same or better. for the cost of a Q6600 for can get a Phenom II X2 Dual Core 555 and it may unlock to a X3 or X4

From an E5200 @ 3.2Ghz to an unlocked Phenom II X4 @ 3.2Ghz using my old 4870 1GB I saw the mimum FPS rise from about 20 something to 30 something on big explosions and when a lot is happening on screen, although average number from FRAPS I could see was from 30 - 45 FPS on the dual core, and 40 - 60 FPS on the quad.

I've definitely seen an improvement, although obviously it was a pain selling all my bits to upgrade but I sold everything fast so it was a fairly easy swap over and I'm glad I jumped over the AMD for a small price.

I don't suppose there would be a huge difference from a Q6600 at 3.2Ghz to a Phenom II at 3.2ghz though, so it would be mainly down to your preference.

bearing in mind certain phenom 2 quad can hit 3.8 @ stock voltages..
i did it with mine literaly only had to turn multiplier up nothing else :)
