I have a HP Microserver running Ubutnu on it, with a mdadm RAID5 array on it, however I have noticed Ubuntu is a bit laggy when using it. So looking at going to xubuntu which has lower system requirements.

Can I just reinstall with that one, and then rescan for my array?

Or is there something I can do to improve the performance of Ubuntu?

Cheers

How can you be sure its gnome?, have you anything else running

been a while but, you can do:

sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get autoremove

so we install xfce, remove gnome, someone correct on this if I'm wrong :).

Nothing else is running just a fresh install of 10.10 so I will assume its gnome.

Is that the only difference between xubuntu and ubuntu as I thought there were underlying differences?

if memory serves me correctly, no!
xubuntu = xfce desktop
ubuntu = gnome --- // now unity
lubuntu = lxde
Edubuntu = enlightenment

gnome is bloated, and with compiz even more so. I personally use xfce 4.8, nice and light. Give it a try, maybe it will sort you out, you can always reverse the command to get back to ubuntu :-)

you may wish to grab openbox too...

You could just try disabling compiz first, or run top and find out what's eating CPU/RAM. But yeah, no need to reinstall just to switch window managers. You can even install XFCE and keep Gnome while you evaluate it; use the session manager on the login screen to choose a desktop to boot into.

err, xfce has approx the same mem usage?

^^ can I ask your source VeNT?

lxde is not as mature as xfce (not for me anyway, main homepage still online? cause it did disappear for a while)+ performance between lxde and xfce is somewhat negligible:

hence saying xfce has same mem usage as gnome is saying lxde uses same mem as gnome aswell... which defeats any changes made at all.

maybe the answer is lubuntu = xubuntu = ubuntu!

Here is the problem. I don't want to offend anyone but your using ubuntu no matter what. Xubuntu is garbage thrown together with little thought by the Ubuntu team. Its the XFCE environment placed on top of the already bloated Gnome environment, rather than XFCE from the bottom up. My xfce memusage is 134mb on boot while in gnome it was 360+, but I use gentoo and compile what I need, so no bloatware at all ....

I gather the same applies to lubuntu ^^

edit: I forgot to add that lxde for me uses 119mb, but like I said, not my cup of tea, but just to acknowledge it does use less mem than xfce :-)

sorry, thats what I ment that xubuntu uses approx the same or more than ubuntu whereas lubuntu seems to use lots less (for me) this is just from installing them all on the same laptop and seeing what kinda mem use they had.
