Swapped mobo cant get overclock back!

Hi,

Need some help as this driving me nuts :mad:.
Swapped from a P5Q-E to an EP45-UD3R (due to tower falling over and cracking the mobo). Previously running a Q6600 at 3Ghz simply by changing FSB to 333 on the Asus.
Now on the EP45 I'm getting lost in an unfamiliar bios and cant get past 2.9GHz with an FSB of 323.
Settings as follows:
MIT
CPU clock ratio x9
CPU host clock control enabled
CPH host frequency 323

CPU
Load Line Calibration Enabled
CPU Vcore 1.325 [Auto]

Everything else left as defaults

Also I cant seem to disable speed step either despite switching to disable in the Advanced BIOS features section.

Frustrated +++ as I was hoping to get a stable 3.2

What am I doing wrong:confused:??

Diffierent mobo, it needs different setting, will clock in different ways etc etc.

You'll need to start again with the OC and test, you cant just put in the same settings and hope it works
 
Sorry, first post isnt clear.
I expected small differences in voltages etc but......
Given how easy Q6600s are to overclock I was anticipating simply upping the FSB to 333 and leaving the rest to auto would at least give me a stable 3Ghz to work from (given both boards are P45 chip sets).
Back to square one is a pain!

Does anyone have a nice stable 3.2 on a EP45-UD3R to give me some hope?

I have the ep45-ud3lr, bios should be very similar.

Have you updated your bios??

If not on the disc with the drivers install the Gigabyte bios update programme, once installed you should find it in your start menu.

When i got this board i left it in my case and ran it with the cpu at stock (2.4ghz) for a couple of weeks, i heard that sometimes that is good to do to let the software "bed-in" (probably wrong !!)

Once done i first set the cpu to 400x8 which gave me 3.2ghz and was stable straight off the bat, ran prime 95 with no probs, v-core was set to 1.41875, i set my mem multiplier to 2 in dram freq.

That ran fine at 3.2 with those settings, after that i set the cpu freq to 378x9, upped v-core to 1.4275 but left the dram at 2, runs at 3.4 no probs.

obviously there may be some different settings in your bios but i would have thought both mine and yours will be very similar

make sure your cpu cooler is good enough to oc, it's all about temps at the end of the day, dont want to kill the chip with bad cooling
 
Thanks for the support guys. At least I've got more confidence it will do it. For the moment I've left it at 2.9Ghz. I'll tinker some more at the weekend.

Memory dividers really confuse me! My ram is 8gb of XMS2 PC2-6400 so I was under the impression I would struggle to get beyond 3.2Ghz as it wouldnt be fast enough, no idea if thats true or not.

have you tried to oc with 4gb ram instead of 8? worth a try, might be a bit stabler, i run vista 32 bit (don't laugh) so i know i cant go over 4gb.

might be worth a try??
 
Updated and sorted thanks to the guys above!
Well a learning process for me but success in the end. The problem was indeed that I did not understand the RAM timings and was running the RAM at too high a frequency by not locking the memory multiplier. My 2.9Ghz settings had the RAM running at 969Mhz (its DDR2-800) which it could do surprisingly well; however increasing the FSB further had it trying to run at speeds it just couldnt do and it failed on the "starting windows" screen.

By locking the system memory multiplier(SPD) setting in BIOS to 2.00B I was able to run with FSBs of 334 and 356 which gave memory frequencies of 668 and 712Mhz - well within spec and the system runs nicely (it hasnt been IBT or Prime95'd yet though so I may have a bit of Vcore fiddling to go)

A big thanks to all who pointed the above out and I now know a little more about overclocking!
