The HDD in my PS3 is getting worse - (its like the drive heads are getting stuck trying to read the same bit over and over - but they get stuck even after switching the PS3 off - then after been unplugged the drive springs back into life again until the next time).

I've ordered a new 500GB HDD, which will prob arrive in the next few days.

I dont have a external USB HDD case etc to use the backup util on the PS3 - but is it possible to connect both the new and old drives to the PC and clone the old drive contents to the new drive - using the software you can get to do this like you can with PC drives etc.

No, the disk format used by Sony is unreadable on PCs. The only way you can do it is by doing a System Backup to an external drive.

Maybe someone will come along and prove me wrong... ;)

If I didn't have an external drive, I'd either buy a cheap USB stick or join PS+ for a month. You can upload your save games to the cloud then. Most data on a PS3 is taken up by downloads (patches/games) and game installs. Both of which can be done again on your new drive.

never mind - i had feeling that windows wouldnt reconise the PS3 drive (i was always tempted to connect the drive playing up to the PC and run a scan/diag prog on it bit didnt want to incase it messed with the drive. - but thought the drive cone programs that run in dos etc would pos still pick it up to make an image of it for the new drive.

Its a shame they couldnt make it a bit easier lol - not looking forward to redownloading all my PSN games and game updates get. Once ive put the new driver in ill just download the psn games from the account list over night.

Luckly i've been saving all my game saves to the online storage.
