Swindon scraps Speed cameras

Good on em I say, maybe now people will pay more attention to the road instead of the big yellow box on the side.

Swindon council are right though, all the speed camera does is catch people who are already speeding, what they need to be doing preventing people from speeding in the first place.

Road safety is a priority, considering the UK has some of the worst roads in europe.

But Helena Houghton from Brake said: "We're strongly opposed to the decision. We think it's a dangerous experiment with people's lives.

"By removing speed cameras you are removing a deterrent. They are crucial in lowering death and injury rates."

That brake company or charity or whatever they call themselves seem retarded.

mobile cameras are worse. Every time I see one they are positioned so you have no chance of seeing them until it's too late.

Brake have perfectly reasonable objectives (i.e. improving road safety), but they are completely clueless as to how to measure or achieve those objectives. The only thing they do well is supplying anti-speed sound bites to the media.

Finally put into action after months of waiting! - it was on Top Gear's news in the last series :D

Glad they're gone though, the 3 places they were in around me will be so much easier to drive across now.

Where I live there are may be 2 fixed speed cameras I know of and no mobile units hiding anywhere ever any more.

Awesome huh?

There's a few fixed units around Norwich but all fairly obvious... there's 1 place on the way to dereham (where I go to sixth form) that often has a mobile camera van but other than that there doesn't seem that many round this way...

in whole of chesterfield i can only think of 10 fixed cameras, 4 of them being on the same road

bet out of them 10 only 2 of them work though

never see any mobile units

(watch me get a ticket na)

Exactly.

Should focus more on making the situation/road safer, get involved in city planning, rather then ''speed kills''.

Sorry but this isnt good news. This means they can get more mobile cameras which in turn make more money!

No sympathy. Most of the mobile cameras I've seen have been on 30mph zones and people who speed on 30mph roads are idiots IMO. I don't mind people who do 50mph in a 40, or even 80mph in a 60mph, but I despise those who exceed the limit in 30mph zones and if they get done, sod them. Includes my own brother who got done for 48mph in a 30mph, had no time for him and pleased he got the 3 points he deserved.

I ride into East London sometimes where my girlfriend lives, and as you approach on the A13 it's littered irregularly with speed cameras and just the markings alone also... on the way there and back today, it struck me just how much attention I was paying to where the cameras were/weren't. It was way too much.

The general flow of traffic is a fair bit higher than the speed limits. There's 3/4 lanes, which on the sort of road it is (busy, loads of turnings off, people changing their mind at the last minute, nearly missing turnings and so on) is plenty to pay attention to especially when coupled with a huge amount of signage, lane changing for different destinations and so on, and it really ****ing grates on me that they've decided that putting speed cameras everywhere is going to help.

I'm certain there's shunts on that road due to everyone crunching up at every speed camera and then racing off again. It's only a matter of time til I see one or am involved in one, I'm sure of it.

Probably too much of a sweeping statement. Outside school on a summers weekend night doing 40 isn't stupid imo (depending on road and visibility).

But yeah, apparently the money to run the cameras will boost the mobile police cameras... not such the 'win' for motorists top gear and the like promote it as!
