Swindon scraps Speed cameras

Probably too much of a sweeping statement. Outside school on a summers weekend night doing 40 isn't stupid imo (depending on road and visibility).

But yeah, apparently the money to run the cameras will boost the mobile police cameras... not such the 'win' for motorists top gear and the like promote it as!

On my commute to work each morning a 40mph zone changes to 30mph without much warning, opposite a school and I have quite frequently seen mobile speed cameras. It's a dirty trick to raise money, but half of me understands why they do it. I think until the day some kid runs out in the road on you in a 30mph zone it's difficult to understand. It happened to me in my first 2 years of driving and it makes you realise that you should drive responsibly on those roads. By all means, there is fun to be had on NSL roads but I really honestly despise idiots who drive on 30mph roads like it's a ralley tournament :)

Not seen a mobile camera around here in ages, fixed ones are useless everyone knows where they all are. Even if you don't a luminous yellow box isn't hard to spot unless you are blind.

I will be interested to see the road traffic/deaths numbers.

I am pretty certain speed cameras save fatalities at the expense of minor traffic accidents. They save fatalities because idiot boy racers would choose to save their license/£60 than do their 100mph hoon in the wet, if they know the speed camera is there. (I support a bit of natural selection).

The government and the country just needs to get real and have the debate - "How many deaths per year is acceptable?". Trying to get them to zero is impossible, expensive (waste of money) and a step backwards.

I have yet to see a mobile camera here!

Good news :D

FYI, Great Western Way (around the newish B&Q and up to the Oasis area) used to be a favourite, although that dual carridgeway did have its speed uped to 50.

I once got a round of applause off an officer with a speed gun at night, he must have liked my driving....oh wait... ;)

yeh this is boring news really, everyone knows where gatso's are so if you're local and get caught you're a bit of a tool!

Mobile vans are getting quite filthy around swindon at the moment.

Swindon council are right though, all the speed camera does is catch people who are already speeding, what they need to be doing preventing people from speeding in the first place.

Road safety is a priority, considering the UK has some of the worst roads in europe.
I find speed camera's can work very well at preventing myself from speeding...It's no problem if you live in the area and know where they are..

That's the only mobile one I've ever seen too, ok I lie... also on Thamesdown Drive, Abbey Meads.

Other than those, I've been quite fine with mobile ones, or am I lucky enough to miss them :D

noticed them all patched up again when i came home this morning, counted 5 camera's covered, 2 on the A419 but then they were covered for about a year previously.
