Hello Everybody :D

My account just got activated (hurray!) so i can finally start posting here.

First of all its nice to see a forum about computers, gaming and everything else in-between with such a nice group of people. Ive spent hours over the last week or so reading all sorts of topics, so i decided its time to sign up.

But anyway back to the topic!

Im currently just finishing of my exams that im doing and im thinking of moving to swindon very soon to start my own life. ive got all the resources and plans necessary to complete this goal with no problem. Ive visited a few places in swindon recently and took a look around the town center etc and it looks like a place i could live happily :)

So question is is anyone in or around the swindon area that could tell me what living there is like and anything i should know about or want to see/consider about before moving there.

Any suggestions or information would be greatly appericated.

Welcome!!

Swindon's ok, i live in Old Town, so it's pretty quiet, the loudest thing i hear at night are cats fighting, (real cats, not cat fights :)

Crimes reasonably low here as well (well the part i live in)

What part of Swindon were you looking at ?

:p

Avoid the north and west.

Old town for the win Mr. Powers! I used to go to Commonweal

*Claimed* (my first!! and he's gonna be local! :D )

Anyhew!... North Swindon has loads of Rental and purchase opportunities!... All the areas have nice little shopping centres, and theres the Asda Walmart 'Orbital Shopping Centre' on Thamesdown Drive...

I'm in Abbey Meads and its very quiet (no chavs!) and not too bad to get into town!,

There's also: Haydon Wick (Older, there's a Morrisons also), Ash Break (Nice New Pub just opened!), Redhouse (Still under construction - I rented there for a while!... Nice!), Oakhurst (Still under Construction), Taw Hill ('spensive!), St Andrews Ridge (Older, closer to Motorola!)....

All Nice Areas!...

I lived in Westlea (West Swindon near J16) for a time!, its an up and coming area!, so if you get in now, you might make out like bandits when the area takes off (theres also Middleaze, Freshbrook, Grange Park and a few others!).

Steer clear of: any of the 'Park *' areas (Park North, Park South), and Toot Hill (though this is on the up!)...

There are also a lot of developments in and arround the Town center (Flats and Appartments) that cater for FTB's and the like!... Most have covered/Gated off-road parking etc...

Hope this helped!
Sim :)

Wow thanks guys for all the information :D

but yeah when i went to visit on the 21st i took a look at a place in Haydon Wick and a place in taw hill. both looked really nice!

For me personally i do like a city kinda life and lots of things to do and see but i also want a bit of country so i think just outside of the city in those areas should be great and swindon in general is deffinatly just about right. Big city with everything and a little bit of countryside.. perfect! :D

But yeah thanks again guys for the warm welcome :) and il be in swindon sooner or later :D

I have lived in the Swindon area for most of my life.

I change my view daily of Swindon. Today I didn't like it. Tomorrow, it may be okay.

In other words, there's nothing great about it, but nothing exceptionally bad.

Crime rate in Wiltshire is low.

If I was showing someone around Swindon, I would take them into Old Town for the pubs and restaurants and the Orbital Shopping park or possibly the Outlet Village for shopping.

The best thing I can think of Swindon is the access roads out are good. You're near to the M4 and M5 isn't far away.

Welcome to the town..

Cool ok mate thanks!

Yeah somedays il start to miss home when i move in. But im sure il settle in just right :)

Yeah the outlet village is great. didnt have much time to visit it when i was there but i did take a peak inside, looks like a cool shopping mall :)

The Outlet Village is nicely designed but since I hate clothes shopping I never really go there :p . Hear they have a little Cadbury shop there though so that might be cool

I agree with an earlier comment that it's not an especially wonderful town but it isn't terrible either. I personally don't like the town centre much, but guess it has most the shops you'd expect. The Greenbridge development is quite nice and so is the Orbital centre. Agree with the areas to avoid ;)

The outlet is the worst place ever.

Ever.

Did I say ever yet?

Can you guess I worked there -_-?

:D . Well I did work experience there myself. I don't mind the place aesthetically and think it's clever how they've used the old railway buildings, but feel it's a shame it just houses loads of clothes shops :p

Well most of the time i will be doing my shopping at the center.. but the outlet mall does seem nicely designed i have to say. but il check it out more when i get there :)

Thanks again for all the information.

w00t swindon reprazent!!!

Yeah, basically avoid anywhere with P in the name, penhill/pinehurst/park south/park north. Oh and old walcott.

Other than that not too bad, plenty of places further away from the centre now its really expanding but mostly family semi's etc.

I would start looking in old town really, but stretch it as far as stratton one way and hillside the other. Personally i wouldnt want to live further out than i currently am because of getting to the town centre the roads are murder.
Saying that if you're commuting then anywhere north especially near the A419 would be very handy.

Good luck and welcome to swinny d!

surely west swindon is better than old town

Naaah. Old Town is probably the most sought after location in Swindon bar centre. The house prices are silly SILLY high. THe only reason I wouldn't like to live in the north or west is that I've got lost every time I've been there :o :p

You've clearly never been to west swindon. It is an absolute dump, full of chavs and 14 year old girls with kids in prams. Old town is a pretty nice area, and generally you dont get stabbed, and then fall onto skag needles.
