Swiping before chip and pin?

Not really anything to worry about - I used to do this when I worked in retail, very common practice and we'd make cloned cards out of the details. It was certainly one of the perks of the job!

I thought this was about Pay Wave before realising that you still had to do the pin number entry part. Presenting your card is a small change to the way we use cards but makes such a difference in terms of time.

They used to do it in PC World too, I'm sure.

Almost certain I recall thinking it was odd that a "technology company" had such archaic systems.

It's because till hardware is not designed primarily for the "chip and pin" stuff we use in the UK, you normally need extra software or modules for it (America uses chipless swipe and pin and other EU countries like France use a different type of chip and pin). Some companies haven't yet paid to have the chip and pin stuff fully integrated into their system, some others just do what the OP described for all cards so their staff procedure is the same for UK and non-UK customers.

It could be a contactless payment.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this possibility.

Pay Wave is one of the Scheme solutions (VISA in this case).

I would highly doubt it was contactless if you had to both swipe the card and put it into the pin pad! That's about as much contact as it's possible to have :p

Don't think its much to worry about. In Morrisons our C&P readers went down and the operators had to swipe on the till and you still had to put the card in the C&P reader to enter your pin number. The readers just didn't allow for a transaction but the card can still be verified in the machine.

Did he swipe the side of the card you were previously holding? Most likely he was obtaining a DNA swab and your clone is in the process of accelerated reproduction ready to take your place when the signal comes.

nothing unusual, done all the time here.

When we were back in the UK last year, even though we have chip and pin cards we still had to swipe and sign when buying anything in the UK, then got a 15 ft long receipt to tax purposes at the end of it.

Agreed, swipe + PIN definitely isn't contactless!

A few shops around here have it now(scan with no pin)

Swipe only, then yes, that would be contactless. It's the same principle as NFC on a phone. On your card, look out for a beacon symbol, looks a bit like the wi-fi logo - that means it's contactless. It works for transactions up to £20. Weatherspoons pub chain is the 1st example that springs to mind that offers contactless.

I doubt it's anything to worry about. Used to do it when I worked in retail as the till units were too dumb to acknowledge chip and pin.
