Guys

I'm thinking of switching antivirus from NOD32 to Microsoft Security Essentials.

Is MSE going to keep flagging up that I haven't installed Windows Updates and annoy me?

(I don't keep my laptop up to date with Windows Updates. That's because Updates once caused a serious problem so I can't be bothered with them. I'm fairly careful about the sites I visit.)

Thanks

I don't think it does i use it at home and have had updates waiting to install on my vista box for 4 weeks now and it has not complained.

im in the same boat, or will be in 2 months. i use MSE on my laptop and think its great, if NOD32 have a deal going on for renewal then i will prob stay with them, if not its not really gonna bother me to fully switch over to MSE on my main rig aswell

Only if you don't use common sense online etc. Personally, I've never used any AV programs or updated Windows in the last 6/7 years, no issues whatsoever ;)

you serious ? dodgy copy of xp? ;)

if you don't have any security updates from the last 7 years and no AV then how can you be so sure you don't have a virus? common sense online is a small part if your os has a big arse hole in it..

These kind of comment always make me laugh.

Seriously how can you possibly know you're computer isn't compromised some how if you don't even update windows let alone use any AV

i know cracks me up, someone has properly been stealing your personal details for the last 6 years building up info, next thing a terrorist will enter the country under your name and blow up stone henge :D

Having Windows and other applications up to date (Flash, Java etc) is almost as important as having AV itself. You are pretty dumb to ignore them, especially with the reason given.

I keep my Windows updated as well as my programs etc - I don't run an A/V though as I see no need to. I just installed a free trial of NOD32 to see if I do have a virus - non so far and been without a/v since installing Win around a year ago on this laptop.

But for the joe average - sure a/v is important.

They are far more important than having AV in my opinion.

I know how it feels to have an update go bad, but they really are necessary.

Most of the malware that jumps on people's computers are through unpatched software. Has absolutely nothing to do with visiting only safe sites.

totally agree, i used to think i was smart and not have a virus scanner or bother with updates, soon learnt the hardway, you are foolish not to keep everything patched and have a decent av scanner running, these days pc's are quick enough and av progs like nod32 for example hardly touch your resources...

saying that more fools that don't bother better for my business, as i charge a set fee of £40 for virus removal :D
