Switch on HTC Desire without battery

Is it possible to switch an HTC Desire on without a battery, or will it only turn on with one in?

Why? I was wondering if the phone is broken or if it's just refusing to turn on because there's no battery. I have no battery for it.

Well providing it's plugged in then it's a valid question. Lot's of devices will work this way, but the HTC Desire isn't one of them.
