Switching from an iMac - what screen?

Hello,

I've got a 24" Intel-based iMac (Core 2 Duo) and I'm about to upgrade into a custom-built PC.

I want to keep the screen size and want to get the best screen I can. I'm willing to spend up to £300 or a little more if it's really worth it.

As far as I understand my iMac screen is LED TFT.
- Is the Acer S243HL stocked here a worthy replacement? Any others?
- Are there any normal LCD screens that give the kind of visual experience an LED screen gives?

Any advice welcome!

Thanks

If you had a core2 24in iMac then I'm pretty sure the panel technology used was either s-IPS or H-IPS - a high quality type of panel with the added bonus of an LED backlight (here is some good info on panel technologies). To match this screen quality you will need to look at comparable 24in+ IPS (and VA) panel monitors:

The Dell U2410 and HP LP2475w both use the same H-IPS panel which is very nice indeed, however there has been some pretty bad QC problems with these panels so you may need to swap it out a few times till you get a perfect one.

VA monitors are very nice too, and will give you most of the good viewing charateristics of your IPS iMac. Some good examples are the S-PVA panel Dell 2408WFP (A02) and Dell 2709W.

Unfortunately all of these monitors cost well over your £300 budget. If you don't want to compromise on quality and keep within your budget - i'd suggest looking at this excellent 22in e-IPS Dell 2209WA.

Unfortunately, the Acer S243HL is not a worthy replacement to your iMac screen. It may be 24in and LED backlit - but the panel technology is TN, which is rather inferior to both S-PVA and IPS in almost every way.

Nice! I'll go for the Dell U2410 after all - I think it's worth the money if it's like my Mac screen. I work on my PC a lot so have to cater for my eyes.

Now, if only it had built-in speakers??
