Switching from O2 to 3, worth doing?

Not read through the posts in this thread yet but want to say Three is one of the worst companies I have ever dealt with. Phone service is mediocre and customer service is an absolute joke.

Their prices and packages are the best when compared to the others though.

I found their customer services very helpful. Yes the call centre is based in India but I've never struggled to understand them and vice versa. I choose 3 on launch day for my iPhone 4 and I'm very glad I did, personal hotspot and USB tethering included :D.

I'm going the other way, Three was great for me in town and when i was in Uni accommodation - but I get zero signal at my parents place.
I don't use many minutes so I'm ditching my £20/month contract for a £10 a month GiffGaff goodybag. Contract is up this September but I'm going to phone up and see about early cancellation.

Not the dozen or so times I was with them. Understanding them is not the problem (don't think I mentioned it?). The problem was they all followed scripts and cannot use their own initiative to sort out issues. Total crap and wasn't worth the hassle for me so I got out of my contract after 18 months was up.

after being on THREE for a week and having a few days of running two phones while my number was ported I can say that the 3 network is better than O2 :)

I was at RAF Marham the other weekend and O2 was on the edge network and I was getting 4Mbps down and 1.5Mbps up on THREE. in the middle of no where :)

THREE have certainly improved a lot since I used them 6 years ago, very happy with the move and service so far.

To follow up on this, I gave them a ring, Indian accent but a clear line, no communication problems and seemed to know what they were doing. Once they confirmed my new postcode had no coverage I was transfered to second line and allowed early cancellation (I'm 6months short of my contract end) with no fees, didn't even have to send back my original contract phone (Nokia 5800) when I said I'd lost it. Got my PAC code as well for transferring my number over to my new GiffGaff SIM (which was ordered and activated online painlessly)
Whole process took about half an hour, a little waiting around during the transfer to second line, but overall a thumbs up, was envisaging a nightmare but it was fine. I'd certainly consider switching back if they have coverage where I live in the future (though it'll take some deal to beat GiffGaff - I don't think I'll ever go back to long term contracts)

Feek - are you sure that personal hotspot is included in a sim only 300/600 tariff? I've just moved to the sim only 600 and whilst the personal hotspot option is now available on my iphone... i've just spoken to 3 and they say tethering is only allowed on the One plan?

Just noticed the 3 website states " Internet allowance is not for use as a modem. 10p/MB if allowance exceeded. Terms apply." you sure you haven't been charged Feek?

Also, voicemail isn't included on a sim only package is it? 30p a minute?

Yes, tethering and voicemail are included on the sim only package I have, absolutely no question about it. I've had it a few months now and it's great. I've been near the bandwidth limit a couple of times but I don't get close to the 300 minutes or the 3000 texts.

Bill query: ok thank you. Also, can my data usage be used via tethering? i.e. use my mobile as a modem?

Advisor Nobin: Sorry, you'll need to activate an add on to use tethering on your phone or you'll incur charges.

Make of the above what you will but that's what 3 have just told me (twice with 2 different advisors...

I believe you Feek but 3 seem to state quite strongly that tethering is only allowed on actual iphone contracts... I'm scared to use it in case they do charge out of the blue!

Do 3 txt you when you near your limit or do you have to actively track your data usage?

How are you finding 3? I'm considering getting the new iPhone with them when Apple finally release it. The one plan looks pretty tasty, just a shame about the 24 month contract.

Maybe I should just buy the phone from Apple and get a SIM free deal...

Excuse the ignorance but aren't they the same thing effectively?

Technically hotspot is using wifi for tethering for upto 5 devices (like a mifi) and tethering on it's own refers to USB/BT for one device. The bottom line is that no network really allows it unless it's part of the plan (hotspot is in 3 plans here and there as they sell the mifi).

Is it trackable by the networks - certainly.
Do they charge for it currently - no.
Will they charge in the future - depending on how much abuse it sees - maybe.

As long as you don't take the **** you'll be fine.

Also buying an iPhone SIM Free is usually a worse off option unless you wish to do a 12 month contract which is about the only timeframe you can do it and make a saving. The main reason against doing this is the price of an iPhone shipped SIM free - for a lot of people this is a bit steep.

Just changed from o2 to three.

I couldn't swallow the huge prices o2 want for less than three are giving. £35 free Samsung Galaxy S2, Unlimited Data, lots of minutes and texts. When o2 want £36 which includes bugger all and I still have to pay for the phone. Signal is also better than o2 where I am.

Three is worth a go to anyone thinking of changing.
