Switching to km/h

In Britain we have the stupid situation where we fill our cars up with fuel measured in litres and then measure the economy in miles per gallon. We measure the weight of our cars in kg but the pressure in our tyres in pounds per square inch.

It's absolutely bonkers. I wish we would just make the switch and stop hanging on to old imperial units that make no sense.

Even our schools don't teach imperial. How many yards in a mile guys? Feet in a yard? Why use units no one born after 1970 knows anything about?

What's your tyre size?

:D

Although I agree, for some reason I think id find it hard to adjust to metric for driving. I just find it easier to gauge speed and distance in miles. Would take some getting used to.

That aside, I think the only real reason id oppose it is as mentioned...the huge cost of changing street furniture nationwide, for very little benefit.

If you're going to do this might as well also change what side of the road we drive on.

There's no logical need for changing to Kph. Besides all cars have both speeds on the speedometer - so no need to worry about when you go to Europe!

I have embarked on my own metrification. All my satellite navigation systems are in metric and I switched the S2000 dash to km/h (digital) ages ago.

Stupid imperial. No place for it in modern Britain.

I've switched everything in my life to be metric. It just makes so much more sense than feet, yards, miles, furlongs, pounds, stones, gallons or whatever.

This is exactly how I feel.

All car measurements come in mm, yet all our height restrictions have to be in feet (but all weight restrictions are in metric).
The highway code gives stopping distances in metres but has to supplement it into feet.
The posts at the side of motorways and major A roads show distances in kilometres yet we still use miles.
All lorry odometers and tachographs are in kilometres yet we're still on miles.
Our CO2 emissions on the cars are measured in grams per kilometre.

All this mess is just on the road signage, this is before people still using stones to weigh, feet to measure height etc etc. It's a bloody mess, I tell ya!

I dont see the issue, if you can do basic maths then its no problem.

Whilst were changing to Km from miles should we change to the Euro too :p

I think that's got more to do with how detached from reality our education system is.

When did you last hear a spotty 18 year old boasting that their Vauxhall Corsa does 250 kpm?

I don't dare do 100MPH in my Corsa let alone 150+.

It makes no difference though really. I soon learned to use Yards, Feet and Inches fairly quickly after school through both work and shooting.

If they did change all the signs and in schools they would start teaching staff in km, m, cm etc. They could also transfer the driver seat to the left of the car and right on road. I still can't get use to change gears with my left hand, but it's not gone happen anyway.

They do? never seen one.

I'd find it harder to go from miles to KM. You'd have to do it for everything. Currently distance is measured in miles so you'd have to change that to - and then you'd have to update maps, globes, etc.

All for no tangible benefits.

No thanks.
