Hi there,

I am thinking of switching my XP Server to linux and i have a couple of questions.

I have chosen Knoppix as my distro and i was wondering how easy it is set up the network and have access to it from an XP machine.

Also i already have all my backups on an NTFS partion on a disk, would i still be able to acccesss them under linux?

Thanks.

I know knoppix can be installed on the disk, but it really is gear as a live cd. Maybe debian or other distro designed a bit more with servers in mind would be a good idea. Of course knoppix is great to test it out and see how it all works.

Network access is easy as anything (as long as it's not wireless which can be a bit more tricky). Most distros will have a nice control panel type thing to do it in, but even doing it with config files is very easy. Especially in the days of dhcp. Samba can be used to share files, and you can also ssh in from XP to the server, meaning no need for a monitor.

You will be able to access your backups, most distros now have full read support for ntfs. Write support is a bit more complicated, and not as stable though.
