Switzerland?

Can anyone recommend a decent website or recent travel guide that I can pick up? I'd love to fly to one place, then look around the bigger cities and travel to the Alps and spend some time up and around them (using the mountain train!)

What about hotels, or B&B's? Cheaper the better but I'm not auditioning for Hostel 3 ;)

I live in Switzerland now, at Lausanne on Lac Leman/Geneva.

Any specific questions I would be happy to answer.

In general, yes it is a fantastic country, hence I moved. Not the best place in the world but certainly one of the best in Europe. Fi you like mountains, the outdoors, etc. then come. Don't think twice.

I literally just got in a from a day skiing with amazing scenery and great snow. I could see the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Grand Combine, Grand Pardiso, Dent de Midi, Grand Mauvran, Dent de Morcle, Wesihorn, Grand Jorasse, Les Diablerets, Bisehorn, Dent Blanche,...., amoungst other mountains....

Im still thinking of studying there next year for this reason. However, two things that put me off is that 1) I don't speak the language (swiss-german part) and I know even though I could get by it will be pretty lonely. 2) If the amount of work I will be doing will even allow me to get much ski time in.

Went to Switzerland about 6 years ago and it was one of the best holidays I have been on.

Flew into Geneva and travelled by train to Bern and then onto Interlaken before finally ending up at Zurich for the flight home.

Stunning scenery, beautiful food and excellent trains.

What level of study? Depending on the Uni Masters level are mostly English, or mixed, or at the leats taught in french/german but engliush is accetable for homework.

At PhD level it is purely English.

I don't speak much French but survive here. I'm never lonely with my lack of language as I have more friends than I have ever had who all speak English fine. But chatting to girls etc. can be pretty much impossible. Even if they speak english they wont be interested.

#2 is fairly valid. I probably average working 5.75 days a week. So I normally have one free day to go skiing climbing.

http://www.myswitzerland.com/en.cfm/home has a lot of info.

B&Bs can be reasonable rpcied but a little scarce, book in advance.

The Hostels can be very good. 55CHF for half board with very clean facilities, good bed. 4 people sharing a room. And thats in Zermatt, one of the most expensive places n the planet.

At Msc Level - http://www.infsecmaster.ethz.ch/ it's fine in English, I checked. Not to mention for what I want to do it is a highly respected course. Phd is a little different I guess because you get people coming from all over the world especially wanting to study abroad. However, do you have many friends who are nothing to do with that?

That chatting to girls is a little off-putting :/

One free day every week to go ski'ing on real snow is still better than the 3 or so times a year I go on holiday for a week/two weeks. :p

Beautiful country,

My ex is from there, was going to move over the lot lol.

Didnt work out, we split at the Italian Grand Prix. in 2003. Loved the country and the people. And the lake is amazing. Coming into Geneve in a thunderstorm was brilliant. :D

What do you call the railway track from WW2 which ends on the glacier (with the Ice tunnels etc) ?

I saw a programme on that a few weeks ago, and it looked stunning.
