if we're talking programs suchlike office 2003 or skype etc, you'll have to re-install them. unless you take an image of the harddrive and then kind of "transplant" it into the new harddrive, totally depends whether you just want to use the new harddrive with all your old stuff or whether you want to save odd bits n bobs or ???

You can get 'disk imaging' software that'll let you copy the windows installation to a bigger drive.

However you probably won't be able to connect both drives to a laptop at once.

Either need to get a USB caddy and connect one of them using that (make sure the imagine software supports USB hard drives).

Or put both drives into a desktop (IDE laptop drives need an adaptor to fit into a desktop).

What is the old hard drive - IDE or SATA? If SATA then you could just plug both straight into your PC and use Ghost/True Image or similar to do the honours, if IDE then as K.C. Leblanc says you'll need an adapter for one or both.

Usually you are however best with a clean install and simply copy over the data.
