Syncing - Gmail/Mail

I am using IMAP on mail with my Gmail account. When I read an email online it shows that it's unread on Mail. Is there any way syncing this?

Is Mail checking for new mail every 5 minutes?

I know you need to tell the iPhone when to "fetch" the data or it won't update the status, either. Might be worth a punt.
